Submission Instructions

BMC Medical Imaging is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:

Research Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published, address any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved the submission, confirm the content has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 350 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions, and articles reporting health care interventions on human participants must also include a Trial registration section.
Manuscript Manuscript must include a title page with the title, full author names and institutional addresses, and corresponding author; a structured abstract; three to ten keywords; Methods and Results sections with the specified content; and a Declarations section with the required subheadings. Manuscript must include three to ten keywords, a Declarations section with the subheadings Ethics approval and consent to participate, Consent for publication, Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, and Acknowledgements, use 'Not applicable' for any irrelevant Declarations subsection, include a list of abbreviations if abbreviations are used, include a Competing interests section, and document any use of a large language model in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References References must follow Vancouver style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and public preprints may be cited; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; and web links and URLs must be numbered and included in the reference list rather than the text.
Figures & Tables Figure titles and legends must be included in the main manuscript while figures are uploaded separately, tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, and larger tables may be placed at the end with callouts in the text. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, cropped gels and blots in the main text must clearly show cropping and be identified in the legend, corresponding uncropped full-length gels and blots must be provided together in one supplementary figure with crop locations and labels matching the main text, and figure legends must note that the full-length blots or gels appear in the supplementary figure.

Previously published figures or tables in non-research articles require permission and citation of the original source, figures and tables must be numbered in text order, multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, and tables must not be embedded as figures or spreadsheet files.

Manuscript must provide three to ten keywords, include a link in the Methods section to an additional file with the full search strategy, state any Large Language Model use in the Methods or another suitable section, and include 'Not applicable' under any non-relevant Declarations heading.
References References must follow Vancouver reference style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and publicly available preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts or data and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, web links must be cited as numbered references, and journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE.
Figures & Tables Tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, longer tables may be placed at the end of the document with callouts in the text, and figure titles and legends must appear in the manuscript while figure files are uploaded separately. Figures and tables must be numbered in citation order, multi-panel figures must be submitted as single composite files, tables must be created with the word processor table function rather than as figures or spreadsheet objects, and table footnotes should use superscript lower-case letters or asterisks for significance values.
