Feature Paper

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must explain the paper’s significance, justify its fit with the journal’s scope, and include statements that the manuscript is not under consideration elsewhere and that all authors approve the submission.
Abstract An abstract is required.
Manuscript Feature Papers must be substantial original articles that involve several techniques or approaches, provide an outlook for future research directions, and describe possible research applications. The manuscript must include keywords, an author contributorship statement using the CRediT taxonomy, a separate Conflicts of Interest section before the references, and disclosures of any generative AI use in the Materials and Methods section and product details in the Acknowledgments section.
References References must be numbered in order of appearance, with citation numbers placed in square brackets before punctuation, although any consistent reference style is allowed at initial submission.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables must be inserted into the main text close to their first citation. All figures, schemes, and tables must be numbered in order of appearance and include a short explanatory title and caption.

Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter must be included with the submission. The cover letter must explain the paper’s significance and fit to the journal, and include statements that the manuscript is not under consideration or published elsewhere and that all authors approved the submission.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Articles. Abstract should be around 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background/Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript should include Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and optionally Conclusions. Manuscript must include a short paragraph specifying the individual contributions of each author and must disclose generative AI use in the Materials and Methods section and provide the tool’s product details in the Acknowledgments section.
References References may be in any style at initial submission if formatting is consistent throughout, and they must be numbered in order of appearance with citation numbers in square brackets before punctuation.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables must be inserted into the main text close to their first citation. All figures, schemes, and tables must be numbered in order of appearance and include a short explanatory title and caption.

Critical Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter must be included with the submission. The cover letter must explain the paper’s significance and fit for the journal, include statements that the manuscript is not under consideration or published elsewhere and that all authors approved the submission, and acknowledge any prior MDPI submissions.
Abstract An abstract is permitted as one of the sections for Critical Reviews.
Manuscript Critical Reviews can include the sections Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Relevant Sections, Discussion, Conclusions, and Future Directions. Critical Reviews must include a statement identifying who was responsible for ideation, who performed the literature search and/or data analysis, who drafted and revised the work, and authors must disclose any use of generative AI in the manuscript.
References References must be numbered in order of appearance in the text, including table captions and figure legends, and citation numbers must appear in square brackets before punctuation.
Figures & Tables All figures, schemes, and tables must be inserted into the main text close to their first citation. All figures, schemes, and tables must be numbered in order of appearance and include a short explanatory title and caption.

Research Notes

Manuscript Research Notes should use a structure similar to that of an article and must include a detailed Materials and Methods section. Manuscript must include an author contributorship statement, a conflicts of interest section before the references, a declaration of any generative AI use in the Materials and Methods section with tool details in the Acknowledgments, and three to ten keywords.
References References must be numbered in order of appearance, cited in square brackets before punctuation, and may be in any consistent style at initial submission.
Figures & Tables Research Notes usually contain two figures and/or a table. Figures and tables must be inserted into the main text close to their first citation. All figures and tables must be numbered in order of appearance and include a short explanatory title and caption.
