Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract is required. Abstract must be unreferenced and no longer than 175 words. Abstract must be unstructured. Abstract must briefly present the background and rationale of the work followed by a statement of the main conclusions introduced by "Here, we show" or an equivalent phrase.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 3,500 words, excluding the abstract, Methods, references, and figure and table legends. Manuscript must be organized into Introduction, Results, Discussion, Online Methods, Acknowledgements, Author contributions, and Competing interests, with the introduction presented without a heading and Results and Methods divided by one-level subheadings only.
References References should typically not exceed 50. References must be numbered in the order of first citation in the main text, then tables, and then figure captions.
Figures & Tables Articles may include up to 8 display items in total, including figures and tables.
