Original Research Papers

Cover Letter A cover letter is required as a separate file and must not exceed one page. The cover letter must summarize the study’s contribution to the literature, relate it to previously published work, specify the article type, describe any prior interactions with PLOS regarding the manuscript, suggest appropriate Academic Editors, and list any opposed reviewers.
Abstract An abstract is required and must appear after the title page. Abstract must be 250–300 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methodology/Principal Findings, and Conclusions/Significance.
Manuscript Manuscripts can be any length. Manuscript must be organized as Title, Authors and Affiliations, Abstract, Author Summary, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, and Supporting Information Captions, with Results and Discussion optionally combined and a 150–200 word non-technical Author Summary placed immediately after the Abstract. Manuscript must include a 150–200 word non-technical Author Summary written in the first person, and any AI tool use must be disclosed in a dedicated Methods section or in the Acknowledgments with the tool names, how they were used and validated, and what content was affected.
References References must use Vancouver style. References must be numbered in order of appearance, cited in square brackets, and formatted using the citation-sequence method listing the first six authors followed by et al.
Figures & Tables There are no restrictions on the number of figures. Figures must not be included in the main manuscript file, while tables must be inserted immediately after the first paragraph in which they are cited and must not be submitted as separate files. Figures and tables must be cited in ascending numeric order, and data must not be duplicated in graphs and tables.

Review

Cover Letter A cover letter must be uploaded as a separate file and must not exceed 1 page. The cover letter must summarize the study’s contribution to the scientific literature, relate it to previously published work, specify the article type, describe any prior interactions with PLOS regarding the manuscript, suggest appropriate Academic Editors, and list any opposed reviewers.
Abstract Reviews must include a short abstract.
Manuscript Reviews must be 3,000–5,000 words and should not exceed 5,000 words except in very exceptional circumstances. Reviews must include a brief Methods section describing how the literature was searched and appraised. Reviews must include a box listing 3–5 key learning points and a box listing 5 key papers in the field.
References Reviews must include 50–80 references. References must use Vancouver style. References must be numbered in order of appearance, cited in square brackets, and formatted using the citation-sequence method with the first six authors followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Reviews should include 3–5 display items such as figures, tables, photos, or illustrations. Figures must not be included in the main manuscript file, whereas tables must be inserted immediately after the first paragraph in which they are cited and must not be submitted separately.

Systematic Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for submission. The cover letter must state that the article is a systematic review or a meta-analysis.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250–300 words. Abstract should follow PRISMA for Abstracts using the PLOS structured abstract format. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methodology/Principal Findings, and Conclusions/Significance.
Manuscript Manuscripts can be any length. The title subtitle should include the study design, the Methods section must state whether a protocol exists, the abstract must provide the registry number if a protocol exists or the review was prospectively registered, and a completed PRISMA checklist and flow diagram must accompany the main text as supporting information.
References References must use Vancouver style. References must be numbered in order of appearance, cited in square brackets, and formatted using the citation-sequence method with the first six authors followed by et al. where applicable.
Figures & Tables There are no restrictions on the number of figures. Figures must not be included in the main manuscript file, the PRISMA flow diagram must be included as Fig 1 where applicable, tables must be inserted immediately after the first paragraph in which they are cited, and tables must not be submitted in separate files. Figures and tables must be cited in ascending numeric order and restricted to those needed to explain the argument of the paper and assess supporting data.
