Submission Instructions

ACS Infectious Diseases accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Article

Cover Letter The cover letter must include the manuscript title; corresponding author’s contact details; names of all authors; a summary of novelty and relevance; justification for suitability for the journal; any prior discussion with an editor; a note on preprint use and updates; and a lay summary (~150 words) at undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry level.
Abstract Articles must contain an unreferenced abstract of 250 words or less that does not contain abbreviations or acronyms unless essential.
Manuscript Articles must include a graphical Table of Contents entry and a list of up to six keywords. Articles should be less than 8000 words in length.
References References at initial submission may follow any style provided they are complete and include titles of cited works; 50-75 references are generally used.
Figures & Tables In general, 7-10 display items (figures/tables/schemes) should be included.

Letter

Cover Letter The cover letter must state any use of a preprint server and how the manuscript has been updated, and include a lay summary (~150 words) at undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry level describing the study’s significance.
Abstract Letters must begin with an unreferenced abstract of less than 150 words that does not contain abbreviations or acronyms unless essential.
Manuscript Letters must be less than 4500 words in length, including the abstract, body text, methods, references, and figure or scheme legends.
References Format references according to The ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication, including complete titles, and aim for approximately 30 references; no explicit maximum reference count is indicated.
Figures & Tables Letters should contain 4–6 display items (figures, tables, or schemes)

Review

Cover Letter The cover letter must include the manuscript title; full contact information for the corresponding author; names of all authors; a highlight of the work’s novelty and relevance; a justification of suitability for the journal; any prior editor discussions; a note on preprint use and updates; and a lay summary (~150 words) at undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry level.
Abstract Reviews must contain an unreferenced abstract of 250 words or less that summarizes the main points.
Manuscript No strict section template (such as IMRaD) is mandated for Reviews beyond inclusion of an introduction, body sections, conclusion, and (where applicable) a Materials and Methods/Methods section. Reviews should be greater than 5000 words in length
References References should number approximately 100–150 for a Review; no explicit maximum reference count is specified.
Figures & Tables Reviews should include 4-8 display items (figures/tables/schemes).

Perspective

Cover Letter The cover letter must indicate any prior discussion with an editor, describe any use of a preprint server and updates to the manuscript, and provide a ~150-word lay summary at undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry level describing the work’s significance.
Abstract Perspectives must contain an unreferenced abstract of 250 words or less, and must include a graphical Table of Contents.
Manuscript Perspective manuscripts may be divided into sections with headings; a brief conclusion highlighting key findings and significance is expected, and an Experimental section headed “Materials and Methods” or “Methods” is used when applicable. Perspectives should be 3000–6000 words in length.
References Up to 100 references are allowed for a Perspective, and previously published related work where portions of the study were disclosed must be cited.
Figures & Tables Perspectives can include 3–6 display items (figures, tables, or schemes).

Viewpoint

Cover Letter A cover letter is required and must include the manuscript title; corresponding author’s name and contact information; names of all authors; a highlight of the manuscript’s novelty and relevance; a justification of suitability for the journal; any prior discussion with an editor; a note on any preprint use and updates; and a lay summary (~150 words) explaining the significance at an undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry level.
Abstract An abstract is required, unstructured, ideally less than ~100 words, without references, using abbreviations sparingly with terms spelled out at first use, and must display the same graphic used for the Table of Contents.
Manuscript Viewpoints should be approximately 1500 words and include a brief conclusion, with no specific overall section structure otherwise specified for this article type.
References Viewpoints typically include about 8–12 references; no maximum reference count is indicated.
Figures & Tables Viewpoints may include up to 2 smaller figures and/or tables (with at least 1 figure strongly encouraged), and graphics for the abstract/Table of Contents should be embedded at points of relevance in the manuscript for initial submission.
