The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the official journal of the American Association of Orthodontists, its constituent societies, the American Board of Orthodontics, and the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics. Published for more than 100 years, it publishes monthly peer-reviewed articles covering all phases of orthodontic treatment, including diagnostic procedures, imaging techniques, materials, extraction and impaction concerns, orthognathic surgery, TMJ disorders, removable appliances, and adult therapy.

Original Articles

Abstract Original Articles should include a structured abstract. Abstract should be 250 words or less. Abstract should be structured. Abstract headings must be Introduction, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Main text should be under 5500 words including the abstract, manuscript text, references, and figure legends. Manuscript must be organized into Introduction and literature review, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, References, and figure captions. Highlights must be submitted in a separate editable file with 3 to 5 bullet points of no more than 85 characters each, and any use of generative AI in manuscript preparation must be declared in a new section before the references list.
References References should follow AMA Manual of Style, 10th edition, and the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals reference format. References must be cited selectively, numbered in the order cited using superscript numbers in the text, included with the manuscript proper, and every listed reference must be mentioned in the text.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables must be submitted separately and not embedded in the word processing manuscript, with tables submitted as text-based files. Figures must be digital images in TIF or EPS format in CMYK or grayscale and mentioned in order in the text, while tables must be self-explanatory, numbered with Roman numerals in text order, given brief titles above the table, and have footnotes placed below the table.
