Original Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required only if research checklists are not applicable, in which case it must state the reason. If research checklists are not applicable, the cover letter must explain why.
Abstract Original Research requires an abstract, with randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses requiring a structured abstract. Structured abstracts for randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses must be no longer than 250 words. The abstract must be structured for randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses. Structured abstracts must use the headings Objective, Design, Setting, Patients, Interventions, Main outcome measures, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Original Research must be no more than 3000 words excluding abstract, tables, figures, and references. The manuscript should include the research type in the title and present key messages after the abstract as a distinct section. Original Research must include key messages after the abstract using the headings 'What is already known on this topic', 'What this study adds', and 'How this study might affect research, practice or policy' in 3–5 sentences.
References Original Research may include up to 40 references. References must follow BMJ Vancouver style. References must be cited in the main text in numerical order and list the first three authors by last name and initials followed by 'et al' if applicable.
Figures & Tables Original Research may include up to 5 tables or illustrations. Tables and figures must be placed at the end of the submission after the references, with figures uploaded as separate files. Tables should be single spaced.
