Bmj Open Respiratory Research accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Original Research

Cover Letter A cover letter consisting of a short introduction to the paper or supporting information is required. If the submission exceeds the word count or identifies non-preferred reviewers, the cover letter must explain the reason.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must be up to 300 words. Abstract must be structured.
Manuscript Manuscript must be up to 4,000 words, excluding the title page, abstract, tables, acknowledgements, contributions, and references. Manuscript must be organized as Abstract, Key Messages, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References, and tables and figures as appropriate. Manuscript must include key messages after the abstract using the headings 'What is already known on this topic', 'What this study adds', and 'How this study might affect research, practice or policy', and it must include a Patient and Public Involvement statement in the Methods section.
References References may include up to 100 entries.
Figures & Tables The submission may include up to 5 tables/illustrations. Editable tables should be included in the main document.

Systematic Review

Cover Letter Cover letter should be submitted as a short introduction to the paper or supporting information. If the submission exceeds the word count, the cover letter must explain why, and if non-preferred reviewers are listed, it must explain why those people were selected.
Abstract An abstract is required for this article type. Abstract must not exceed 300 words. A structured abstract should be uploaded where applicable.
Manuscript The source does not provide a manuscript word or page limit specifically for Systematic Reviews. Systematic Reviews should follow the Original Research article requirements, and the title must identify the study as a systematic review.
References References requirements are not specified.
Figures & Tables The main document must contain the main text, references, and editable tables.
