Empirical Articles

Abstract Abstract is required for Empirical Articles. Abstract must not exceed 150 words.
Manuscript Manuscript should aim for a maximum of 12,000 words inclusive of front matter and back matter. Manuscript must include a separate Transparency and Openness section immediately before the Method section with Preregistration, Data, materials, code, and online resources, and Reporting subsections. Manuscript must include Author Contributions and Conflicts of Interest sections after the main text and before the references, and any use of language models must be disclosed in the methods or acknowledgements section including which model was used and for what purpose.
References References must follow APA 7th edition style. Any use of pre-existing data, code, or other research products must be cited in both the text and the reference list, and secondary analyses of pre-existing data should cite the data set with a unique identifier when available.
Figures & Tables Empirical Articles may include a combined total of no more than 6 tables and figures. For initial submission, tables and figures may be placed at the end of the manuscript. Each table or figure should occupy no more than one printed page, and for accepted manuscripts figures must be embedded near their first discussion with captions placed directly below.

Manuscript Stage 1 manuscript must include Introduction, Methods, and Results sections, and Stage 2 must add an abstract and a general discussion section while preserving the registered hypotheses. Manuscript must include Author Contributions and Conflicts of Interest sections, the disclosure section required of all empirical papers with placeholders as needed, clearly identified pilot data if included, placeholders for results/tables/figures at Stage 1, a link to the registered protocol at Stage 2, separate labeling of exploratory analyses, access to all data and materials, and clear marking of any textual changes to the Introduction or Methods.
References References must follow APA 7th edition style. Any use of pre-existing data, code, or other research products must be cited in both the text and reference list, and secondary-analysis data sets must be cited with a unique identifier when applicable.
