Critical Reviews in Toxicology publishes review articles on toxicology and the application of toxicological information to assess human health hazards and risks. The journal covers mechanisms of action, responses, and assessment of health risks due to toxicant exposure across chemicals, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, environmental agents, and occupational exposures, and operates a single-anonymized peer review policy.

Review Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must include a concise summary of the manuscript with its title and main objectives and 3–4 sentences explaining what the critical review adds to the current literature or knowledge base.
Abstract An abstract is required.
Manuscript Manuscript must be compiled in the order title page, abstract, keywords, abbreviation list, table of contents, main text with introduction, materials and methods, literature review methodology, results, discussion, acknowledgments, declaration of interest statement, references, appendices if applicable, tables with captions, figures, and figure captions. Manuscript must include a word count, 5–15 keywords, an alphabetical abbreviation list, a disclosure statement under the subheading "Disclosure of interest," funding details, and acknowledgment of any AI use in writing the paper.
References References must follow CSE style. References in Review Articles must be relevant, timely, verified, fair and balanced, and not unfairly biased toward any particular research group, organization, or journal.
Figures & Tables Figures must be saved separately from the text, and appendices must be included in the main manuscript file after the references. Tables must be supplied as editable files and should present new information rather than duplicating the text.

Letter To The Editor

Cover Letter Cover letter is required for Letter To The Editor submissions. Cover letter must include a concise summary with the manuscript title and main objectives, and if more than six authors are listed it must justify this by outlining each author's contribution.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript Letter To The Editor submissions are limited to 1500 words. Letters commenting on published articles must be titled "Comment on [Article Title]", and author replies must be titled "Authors' reply to Comment on [Title]" with "Comment" changed to "Comments" when replying to multiple letters. Letter To The Editor submissions must include affiliations for all authors, an email address for the corresponding author, and a full Disclosure of Interest statement acknowledging any relevant financial or non-financial interests.
References Letter To The Editor submissions must contain no more than 15 references. References must follow the CSE reference guide. One reference must be the article under discussion, and citations should support claims with relevant, timely, and verified literature.
Figures & Tables Letter To The Editor submissions must not contain any figures or tables.
