Research Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for initial submissions.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be limited to 250 words or fewer. Abstract must be unstructured. Abstract must concisely summarize the paper, avoid abbreviations and references, exclude diagrams, and include a succinct description of the microbe and its associated disease.
Manuscript Manuscript must include a title page and sections including Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Acknowledgments, and References, with a Data availability paragraph at the end of Materials and Methods. Manuscript must include keywords and research areas at submission, and the title page must include the title, running title, author names, affiliations, corresponding author email addresses, and any required present-address or co-first-author footnotes.
References References must use a numbered citation style in citation order. References must be numbered in the order cited, cited parenthetically by number in sequential order in the text, list all authors and editors without using "et al.," use PubMed journal abbreviations without periods, and include URLs for accession numbers and code or software citations.
Figures & Tables Tables may be included in the manuscript file, and figures may be included in the Word file or uploaded separately at initial submission. Figures and tables must be numbered in citation order, all must be cited in the text, tabular data must include standard deviation or standard error values and replicate counts, and appendix figures and tables must be labeled with an "A" prefix.

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must state whether the article was solicited and by whom.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be 250 words or fewer.
Manuscript Manuscript must be limited to 6,000 words excluding references. Content must be based on published articles. Keywords and research areas must be included, and biographical text must appear after the References section in the same manuscript file.
References References must be numbered in citation order, cited parenthetically by number in sequential order in the text, include all authors and editors without using "et al.", use PubMed journal abbreviations without periods in abbreviated words, and list only works cited in the text while unpublished data, submitted manuscripts, personal communications, and websites are cited parenthetically in the text instead of listed in the References section.
Figures & Tables Tables may be incorporated into the main submission file, and figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately at initial submission. Bio photos must be provided as black-and-white passport-size head shots with filenames containing the author's name or enough of it for identification.

Letters To The Editor

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must state the article's DOI, the title of the article, and the last name of the first author.
Abstract Abstracts are not permitted.
Manuscript Letter must be no more than 500 words long, exclusive of references. Letter must be intended only for comments on articles published in the journal. Title must appear on the manuscript and on the submission form.
References References must be numbered in the order cited, include all authors and editors without using "et al.," use PubMed journal abbreviations without periods in abbreviated words, include URLs for database accession number and code or software citations, list only cited references in the References section, and place unpublished data, submitted manuscripts, personal communications, and websites in parenthetical text citations instead.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables should be kept to a minimum. Figures may be included in the Word file or uploaded separately at initial submission.
