IRBM is the journal of the AGBM, the SFGBM, and the AFIB. It is devoted to fundamental as well as clinical research in biomedical technologies, with biomedical engineering and the use of new technologies as core themes. The journal publishes six issues per year including reviews, original articles directed at fundamental research, and articles focusing on biomedical engineering, covering areas such as physiological and biological signal processing, medical image processing, biomechanics, biomaterials, medical physics, biophysics, sensors, healthcare information technologies, disability research, and computational physiology.

Original Article

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Article submissions. The abstract must be structured. The structured abstract should provide the context or background for the research, state its purpose, basic procedures, main findings and principal conclusions.
Manuscript Original Article text must not exceed 16 typed pages at 270 words per page, excluding tables, figures and references. Original Article manuscripts should include the sections Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion and References. Original Article submissions must include highlights and a graphical abstract, the manuscript must include keywords and a declarations of interest statement, and any use of generative AI must be declared at the end of the manuscript before the references.
References Original Articles are limited to 30 references, except in particular cases to be discussed with the editor. References must be cited by number in square brackets in the text and listed in numbered order of first appearance.
Figures & Tables Each illustration must be submitted as a separate file, captions must be supplied separately, and source files are required whether or not figures are embedded in the text. Tables must be submitted as editable text rather than images and must be numbered consecutively, and all figures and tables must include captions or titles with any needed explanatory notes.

General Review

Abstract Abstract is required because the submission must include a title page with an abstract. Abstract should be structured. Abstract should provide the context or background, purpose, basic procedures, main findings, and principal conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 3750 words. Article must be divided into clearly defined and numbered sections. Manuscript must include keywords, 3 to 5 highlights bullet points submitted in a separate editable file, a graphical abstract submitted as a separate file, a declaration of interest statement, and an AI-use declaration at the end of the manuscript before the references if AI tools were used.
References Reference list must contain no more than 50 references except in exceptional circumstances. References must be cited by number in square brackets. Reference list must be numbered in the order of first appearance in the text, and journal names must be abbreviated according to the List of Title Word Abbreviations.
Figures & Tables General Reviews must not contain more than 5 figures. Each illustration must be submitted as a separate file and captions must be supplied separately. Tables must be submitted as editable text rather than images and must be numbered consecutively in the order cited in the text.

Short Communications must follow the basic requirements of full paper manuscripts and include a title page with author names and affiliations. The manuscript must include keywords, and if generative AI was used in manuscript preparation, an AI declaration must be placed at the end of the manuscript before the references.
References References must be cited by number in square brackets. The reference list must be numbered in the order of first appearance in the text, and journal names must be abbreviated according to the List of Title Word Abbreviations.
Figures & Tables Figures must be submitted as separate files with captions supplied separately, while source files for figures, tables, and text graphics are required whether or not figures are embedded in the text. All figures and tables must be cited in the text, figures must include captions, and tables must include titles, descriptions, and footnotes.
