Journal of Investigative Surgery publishes international peer-reviewed scientific articles related to the advancement of surgery and surgical techniques, including research that improves understanding of surgical disease, patient care, and rehabilitation of surgical patients. Its scope spans human and veterinary medicine, dentistry, basic and applied sciences, engineering, and law and ethics as they pertain to surgery. The journal converted to a full Open Access journal from Volume 36 (2023), while previous volumes remain pay to read.

Research Article

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract is required for Research Articles. Structured abstract must be 200 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.
Manuscript Main text should be organized in the order Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion, with Research Articles typically also including a Conclusion. Manuscript should include no more than 5 keywords and must include a declaration of interest statement, with appendices, tables with captions on individual pages, figures, and a list of figure captions arranged after the references as appropriate.
References References may be in any consistent scholarly citation style or format, and every bibliographic entry must have a corresponding in-text citation.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables may be placed within the text or submitted as separate documents, but Research Articles should arrange tables with captions on individual pages followed by figures and then a list of figure captions.

Manuscript Letters to the Editor are limited to 1500 words, but letters discussing an original article should be no more than 500 words, letters concerning articles already published in Journal of Investigative Surgery must not exceed 750 words, and letters discussing a published paper should be received within 30 days of its appearance. Letters to the Editor should be organized in the following order: title page, keywords, main text, acknowledgments, declaration of interest statement, and references, and letters discussing an original article should use the title format: Regarding: “Article title”. Keywords and a declaration of interest statement are required, and a statement disclosing whether and how generative AI has been used in the research and manuscript preparation process must be included.
References Letters to the Editor must contain no more than 15 references, but letters discussing an original article should include no more than 5 references. Letters to the Editor must include one reference to the article under discussion, including the Journal of Investigative Surgery article for letters discussing an original article.
Figures & Tables Letters to the Editor must not contain figures or tables.
