Article

Cover Letter A cover letter must be included with the submission. Cover letter should explain the importance of the work and its suitability for the journal’s diverse readership, and if double-blind peer review is chosen it must include all authors’ affiliations and contact information.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be up to 150 words. Abstract must be unstructured and unreferenced. Abstract should briefly describe the background and rationale and then state the main conclusions introduced by the phrase 'Here we show' or an equivalent.
Manuscript Main text must be up to 4,500 words excluding the abstract, Methods, references and figure legends. Manuscript should be divided into Introduction without a heading, Results, Discussion and Online Methods, with topical subheadings in Results and Online Methods only and none in Discussion. Manuscript file must include Methods, figures and Extended Data if applicable, and any use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or a suitable alternative section if no Methods section is available.
References References are typically recommended up to 60. References must be numerical. References must be numbered sequentially and cited articles must include article titles, with Methods-only references continuing the numbering from the main text.
Figures & Tables Display items are limited to 8 figures and/or tables, with up to 10 additional Extended Data display items allowed. Tables must be included at the end of the text document. All figures must be cited in sequence within the main text.

Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be 100–150 words. Abstract must be unstructured. Abstract must briefly present the background and rationale followed by the main conclusions introduced by the phrase 'Here we show' or an equivalent.
Manuscript Main text must be up to 4,000 words excluding the abstract, online Methods, references and figure legends. Letter

Cover Letter A cover letter must be included with the submission. Cover letter should explain the importance of the work, why it suits the journal’s broad readership, and if double-blind peer review is chosen, include all authors’ affiliations and contact information.
Abstract An abstract is not permitted because a Letter must include an introductory paragraph instead. The introductory paragraph must be no longer than 150 words. The summary must be provided as an unstructured introductory paragraph that is referenced and counted as part of the main text. The introductory paragraph must summarize the background, rationale, main results and implications, and should introduce the main conclusions with 'Here we show' or equivalent.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 2,500 words, excluding the introductory paragraph, online Methods, references and figure legends. Letters must not be divided by headings, except that the online Methods may use up to two levels of headings. Use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References References are typically recommended up to 40. References must be numbered sequentially and cited article references must include article titles.
Figures & Tables Letters must include 2–4 display items and may include up to 10 Extended Data display items. Tables must be included at the end of the text document, while complex tables may be submitted as a separate Excel file.
