Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter should explain the importance of the work, why it suits the journal’s broad readership, disclose related manuscripts under consideration or in press elsewhere, and state any prior discussions with an editor.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be no more than 150 words. Abstract must be unstructured and unreferenced.
Manuscript Main text must be up to 4,000 words excluding the abstract, Methods, references and figure legends. Manuscript must be organized as Introduction without a heading, Results, Discussion, and Online Methods, with topical subheadings in Results and Online Methods but not in Discussion. Manuscript file must include Methods, figures and any applicable Extended Data, include all elements needed for interpretation and replication, and document any use of a Large Language Model in the Methods section or a suitable alternative section if no Methods section is available.
References References are recommended to be up to 60. References must be numbered sequentially in citation order, include only one publication per reference, and include titles of cited articles.
Figures & Tables Article may include up to 6 display items and no more than 10 Extended Data display items or 10 Extended Data figures. Figures must be included in the manuscript file, while tables must be placed at the end of the text document and complex tables may be submitted separately as an Excel file. All figures must be cited sequentially in the text and each figure legend must include a brief title and short panel descriptions.

Brief Communication

Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be unreferenced and no longer than 150 words. Abstract must be unstructured. No abstract headings are permitted because the article contains no headings.
Manuscript Main text must be no longer than 2,000 words including the abstract, references and figure legends. Manuscript must contain no headings and must include an Online Methods section. Use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or, if no Methods section is available, in another suitable part of the manuscript.
References References are recommended to be limited to 20. References must be numbered sequentially in order of appearance, and article titles must be omitted from the reference list.
Figures & Tables Up to 2 display items are permitted, although this may be flexible at the editor’s discretion if the page limit is maintained. Tables must be included at the end of the text document.
