Practical Radiation Oncology is an official journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology that aims to improve the quality of radiation oncology practice. It publishes content on patient safety, quality measurement and improvement, imaging, contouring, target delineation, simulation, treatment planning, immobilization, organ motion, practical clinical issues, ASTRO guidelines and consensus statements, and essays on caring for cancer patients and their families.

Original Reports

Cover Letter A cover letter is required only if there are more than 15 authors. Cover letter must justify an author count greater than 15.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must be 300 words or fewer. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include purpose, methods and materials, results, and conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must be 4000 words or fewer including the abstract, body, and figure captions but excluding references. Manuscript must include an introduction, methods and materials, results, discussion, and conclusions. A declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process must be included at the end of the manuscript before the references if such tools were used.
References References must not exceed 50. References must follow AMA Style if formatted by the authors. References must be numbered and listed in the order they appear in the text, with every in-text citation matched in the reference list and every listed reference cited in the text.
Figures & Tables The combined total of tables and figures must not exceed 8. Tables and figures must not be included in the manuscript document and must be submitted separately, with all tables in one anonymized Word file and each figure or sub-figure as a separate file. Figures must be numbered sequentially, limited to no more than six panels each, include labeled axes where applicable, and have captions that define all symbols and abbreviations.

The manuscript must include a references section and a Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process statement before the references if generative AI or AI-assisted writing tools were used.
