Academic Psychiatry is a hybrid journal focused on education at the intersection of biomedicine and the social sciences. It emphasizes original scholarly work for training and advocating for medical students, residents, fellows, and health care professionals in psychiatry and the behavioral sciences, and serves as a professional development forum for academic leaders in psychiatry. It is the official journal of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry, American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, Association for Academic Psychiatry, and Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry.

Research

Cover Letter A cover letter outlining the research must be uploaded. The cover letter must briefly discuss the context and importance of the work and why it is appropriate for the journal.
Abstract An abstract is required for Research submissions. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must include the headings Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript The manuscript must be 2,500 to 5,000 words long. The text must be organized under the main section headings Methods, Results, and Discussion, must not begin with any headings, and must not include separate headings for research limitations or conclusions. A disclosure statement and a data availability statement are required, and the manuscript must include a Declarations section before the reference list while any use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or another suitable part of the manuscript.
References Research submissions are limited to 40 references. References must be cited in the text using numbers in square brackets and listed consecutively in a numbered reference list containing only cited works that have been published or accepted for publication.
Figures & Tables Research submissions may include no more than 5 total tables and figures. Figures and tables must be placed in the body of the text where they are referenced, although figures may be submitted within the body of the text unless file size causes upload problems. Tables and figures must be numbered with Arabic numerals, cited in consecutive numerical order, and each must have a caption, with figure captions included in the manuscript text file rather than in the figure file.

Case Study

Cover Letter A cover letter must be uploaded with the submission. The cover letter must briefly explain the context and importance of the work, why it is appropriate for the journal, and confirm that all co-authors approved the submission and that the corresponding author is submitting in accordance with journal policies.
Abstract Abstracts must not be included for Case Studies.
Manuscript Case Studies must not exceed 2,250 words. Case Study headings must be narratively framed rather than structured like empirically focused reports. The manuscript must omit the title page and acknowledgements, include a "Declarations" section before the references with required statements or 'Not applicable' where irrelevant, and disclose any use of a Large Language Model in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References Case Studies are limited to 20 references. Citations must use numbered references in square brackets. Reference list entries must be numbered consecutively and include only cited published or accepted works, with full bibliographic details and DOI links where available.
Figures & Tables Case Studies may include no more than 2 tables and figures. Figures and tables must be placed in the body of the text where they are referenced, although figures may be uploaded separately if file size causes problems. Figures and tables must be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals and each must have a descriptive caption.
