American Family Physician is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:

Clinical Review Articles

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be 100 to 200 words. Abstract should be unstructured.
Manuscript Manuscript text should be 1,500 to 1,800 words with a maximum of 2,000 words, excluding the title page, abstract, literature search and data sources, references, tables, and figures. Manuscript must be arranged in the following order: title page, abstract, text, literature search and data sources, references, tables, and figure legends. Manuscript must include a Literature Search and Data Sources paragraph with the search strategy, keywords, key sources, search dates, any applicable statement on individual characteristic classification variables, the Essential Evidence Plus Summary, a SORT table with three to seven key clinical recommendations each rated A, B, or C, and disclosure of any AI technology used including the technology name, affected manuscript portions, and supporting medical literature citations.
References Clinical Review Articles should not exceed 50 references and must have no more than 50 in-text reference citations. References must be cited numerically in order of appearance, the reference list must appear in numerical rather than alphabetical order, journal titles must use PubMed abbreviations, references with three or fewer authors must list all authors, references with more than three authors must list the first three followed by et al., authors’ initials must not contain periods, beginning and ending page numbers must be included, and Endnotes or other automated reference functions must not be used.
Figures & Tables The SORT table must contain three to seven key clinical recommendations. Tables must be included within the manuscript file on separate pages after the references, while photo figures and algorithms must be submitted as separate files and figure legends must be placed at the end of the manuscript file. Tables must be editable Word tables that are numbered, titled, cited in the text, and accompanied by complete citations or marked as original, while figures must be numbered, titled, cited in the text, accompanied by complete citations or marked as original, and not sourced from Internet downloads or photographs of other publications.

Manuscript Letters to the Editor must be less than 400 words. AI use must be disclosed at submission, including the type of AI used and how it was used.
References Letters to the Editor may include no more than six references. References must be numbered in order of citation, and if the letter responds to a previously published article, that article should be included as one of the references.
Figures & Tables Letters to the Editor are limited to one table or figure. The letter must be submitted in a Word document, with tables generally included in the main document and each figure submitted as a separate file. Tables must be created with Word’s table function and placed on separate pages with titles, and figure legends must be provided on a separate page at the end of the manuscript.
