Submission Instructions

Biomaterials Science accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Communications

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must include a statement of the importance of the work and a brief explanation of why publication as a Communication is justified.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract should be around 50 to 250 words. Abstract must be a single paragraph.
Manuscript Communications are recommended to be three printed journal pages in length. Manuscript must include an Author contributions section using CRediT and a conflicts of interest statement, and any use of artificial intelligence tools must be declared in the acknowledgements.
References References must use Vancouver style. Citations must appear as superscript numbers in sequential order and the reference list must be presented in numerical order with the names and initials of all authors given in each reference.
Figures & Tables Numbered figures must be included within or at the end of the text. Figures should include error bars where appropriate and any images used should be numerically referenced in the figure caption.

Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state the correct journal name, be addressed to the relevant Associate Editor or Executive Editor, and include a succinct statement of the importance or impact of the work.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract should be a single paragraph of around 50 to 250 words. Abstract must be unstructured as a single paragraph.
Manuscript Reviews must be authoritative, critical, state-of-the-art accounts of the selected research field that focus on key developments rather than comprehensively reviewing the literature, be easily comprehensible to non-specialists, and contain no original research. The manuscript must include an Author contributions section using CRediT, a conflicts of interest statement, and an acknowledgement of any use of artificial intelligence tools.
References References must use Vancouver style with superscript numbers in the text. References must be cited in numerical sequence, listed in numerical order at the end of the article, and include the names and initials of all authors in each reference.
Figures & Tables Numbered figures must be included within or at the end of the text. Data should not be reproduced in both figures and tables without good reason, and figures should include error bars where appropriate.

Minireviews

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state the correct journal name, be addressed to the relevant Associate Editor or Executive Editor, and include a succinct statement of the importance or impact of the work.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract should be around 50 to 250 words. Abstract must be a single paragraph.
Manuscript Minireviews are recommended to be three printed journal pages in length. Minireviews must be authoritative, critical, state-of-the-art accounts that highlight key developments in an emerging biomaterials science area from the last two to three years, set the topic in the context of the relevant literature, and do not include unpublished original research. The manuscript must include an Author contributions section using CRediT, a conflicts of interest statement, and an acknowledgement of any use of artificial intelligence tools.
References References must use Vancouver style. Citations must appear as superscript numbers in correct sequence and the reference list must be ordered numerically with the names and initials of all authors given in each reference.
