Nature Reviews Bioengineering is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:

Review

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract A 200-word abstract is required for the proposal synopsis. The proposal synopsis abstract must be 200 words. The manuscript abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript Review articles are approximately 6,000 words long. The article should open with an introductory section without subheadings and end with a brief summary section without subheadings. The manuscript must include 4–6 key point bullets of no more than 30 words each and a statement of responsibility specifying each author's contribution, and glossary terms are not allowed.
References Review articles may contain up to 150 references. References must use Nature Reviews style. References must be cited as superscript numbers in sequential order and list only the first author followed by 'et al.' when there are six or more authors.
Figures & Tables Review articles typically include 5–7 display items in total, including figures, tables, and boxes. Tables must be provided as part of the article document, except tables containing graphical content, which must be provided as separate image files. Display items must be cited in the main text in order, and figures, tables, and boxes must each have a short title.

Manuscript Perspective articles are approximately 5,000 words long. Manuscript must include an introductory section without subheadings, may use up to three levels of headings, and must end with a brief concluding section without subheadings. Manuscript must include 4–6 brief key points of 30 words or fewer each, a competing interests statement, a statement of responsibility specifying every author's contribution, documentation of any LLM use in the Methods section or another suitable section, and no glossary terms.
References References should be approximately 25 per 1,000 words. References must use Nature Reviews style. Citations must be superscript numbers cited sequentially with the reference list ordered by main text, tables, figures, and then boxes, and references with six or more authors must list only the first author followed by 'et al.'.
Figures & Tables Perspective articles may include no more than 5 display items, including tables, figures, and boxes. Tables and boxes must be provided as part of the article document, while tables containing graphical content must be provided as separate image files. Tables must have a short title, no legend, entries in all cells, defined abbreviations, and at least three columns of data, while figures must be fully labelled and include a short title and brief concise legend defining abbreviations.
