BMC Nephrology is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles on all aspects of the prevention, diagnosis and management of kidney and associated disorders, as well as related molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and epidemiology. The journal is affiliated with the UK Kidney Association and publishes interdisciplinary research focused on advancing nephrology.

Research Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published, address any journal policy issues, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved the submission, confirm the work has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 350 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include separate Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions headings, and a separate Trial registration heading for reports of health care interventions on human participants.
Manuscript Manuscript must include Background, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, and a Declarations section, and the Methods section must include the aim, design and setting, participant or material characteristics, processes or interventions and comparisons, statistical analysis, and a power calculation if appropriate. Manuscript must include three to ten keywords, a list of abbreviations if abbreviations are used, and Declarations subheadings that remain present with 'Not applicable' where irrelevant, and any use of a Large Language Model must be documented in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References References must follow Vancouver style. Only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and public preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, web links must be numbered and included in the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, and web references should include identifiable authors where applicable.
Figures & Tables Tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, larger tables may be placed at the end with placement indicated in the text, and figures must be uploaded separately in the order first cited. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, figure titles and legends must appear in the manuscript, cropped gels or blots must be clearly identified in the legend with corresponding uncropped full-length versions provided together in one supplementary figure, and tables must be created as tables rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheet files.

References References must follow Vancouver reference style. Only articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts that are published, in press, or available through public preprint servers may be cited; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; web links and URLs must be assigned a reference number and included in the reference list; and datasets cited in the reference list should include the minimum information recommended by DataCite.
Figures & Tables Figures must be uploaded separately in the order first cited, while tables shorter than one page may be placed in the manuscript and longer tables may be placed at the end of the document with placement indicated in the text. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, figure titles and table titles must not exceed 15 words, figure legends and table legends must not exceed 300 words, tables must not be embedded as figures or spreadsheet files, and footnotes must not contain figures or tables.

Systematic Reviews

Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in BMC Nephrology, explain any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm that all authors approved the submission, and confirm that the manuscript content has not been published or submitted elsewhere.
Abstract An abstract is required. If the systematic review is registered, the registration number must be included as the last line of the abstract.
Manuscript Systematic Reviews must be submitted as Research articles. The manuscript must include competing interests and availability of data and materials sections, and any use of a large language model must be disclosed in the Methods section or another suitable section if no Methods section is available.
References Only articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts that are published, in press, or publicly available as e-prints or preprints may be cited, unpublished abstracts/data/personal communications must be excluded from the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, and web links must be numbered and included in the reference list with full site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, longer tables may be placed at the end with placement indicated in the text, and figures must be uploaded separately in the order first cited. Figures must have titles in the manuscript of no more than 15 words and legends in the manuscript of no more than 300 words, while tables must be created using the table function rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheet files.
