British Journal of Clinical Psychology is an international journal publishing research relevant to mental health researchers and practising clinicians. It publishes work that improves understanding and treatment of mental illness across the lifespan and across the spectrum of psychopathology, and welcomes submissions using methods including cross-sectional studies, experiments, meta-analyses, and randomized controlled trials.

An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Objectives, Design, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript
Papers describing quantitative research must be no more than 5000 words, excluding the abstract, reference list, tables, and figures. Main body should be formatted as introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. Manuscript must include Practitioner Points as 2–4 bullet points following the abstract under the heading 'Practitioner Points' and include up to seven keywords.

A brief cover letter is required for Stage 1 submissions and a Stage 2 resubmission cover letter is also required. The Stage 1 cover letter must include a brief scientific case for consideration, an anticipated study timeline, confirmation that if the paper is withdrawn a short summary will be published under 'Withdrawn Registrations', and confirmation that the approved protocol will be registered on the Open Science Framework or another recognized repository after Stage 1 in-principle acceptance, while the Stage 2 resubmission cover letter must collectively certify that all non-pilot data were collected after in-principle acceptance and should state the page number containing the approved Stage 1 protocol URL.

Initial Stage 1 submissions must include Introduction and Methods sections covering the key research question, background literature, hypotheses, experimental design and procedures, analysis pipeline, planned comparisons, power analysis where appropriate, sample characteristics, inclusion and exclusion criteria, covariates or regressors, contingencies in analysis decisions, and outcome-neutral success criteria, and Stage 2 manuscripts may report only pre-planned analyses in the main Results with unplanned exploratory analyses in a separate Results section. All manuscripts must include 2–4 Practitioner Points bullet points under the heading 'Practitioner Points' following the abstract, include up to seven keywords, and Stage 2 manuscripts must contain the URL of the approved Stage 1 protocol with any textual changes to the Introduction or Methods clearly marked.
