Diabetes publishes original research about the physiology and pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. Submitted manuscripts can report any aspect of laboratory, animal, or human research. Emphasis is on investigative reports focusing on areas such as the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications, normal and pathological pancreatic islet function and intermediary metabolism, pharmacological mechanisms of drug and hormone action, and biochemical and molecular aspects of normal and abnormal biological processes.

Original Articles

Cover Letter If online-only supplemental material is included, the cover letter must justify the necessity of the online supplement.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 200 words. The abstract must be unstructured, concise, and precise. The abstract should state the rationale, objectives, findings, and conclusions of the manuscript.
Manuscript The main text is limited to 4,000 words excluding the title page, abstract, acknowledgments, references, tables and figures, and table and figure legends. Original Articles must be arranged in the order of title page, abstract, introduction, Research Design and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, references, tables, and figure legends. Article Highlights are required immediately after the abstract as four complete-sentence bullet points of 75 to 100 words or fewer answering why the study was undertaken, the question addressed, what was found, and the implications, and the Acknowledgments must include an Author Contributions paragraph, brief assistance statements, the guarantor's name, funding or financial support, and prior abstract publication where applicable, with AI use disclosed there or in Methods if applicable.
References The article must contain no more than 50 references. References must be numbered in the order cited, cited in the text with normal-type numbers in parentheses, list all authors, provide inclusive page numbers, and appear at the end of the document after the main text and acknowledgments and before the tables.
Figures & Tables The article must contain no more than a combined total of 8 tables and figures. Tables must be placed at the end of the main document after the references, while figures must be uploaded as separate files and figure legends placed at the end of the main document. Supporting documents or data for review must be clearly labeled "supporting document/data," and online supplemental material must be uploaded as a separate file for online-only publication.
