Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must outline the research context, the importance of the submitted work, and why it is appropriate for the journal.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be less than 250 words.
Manuscript The manuscript must include a funding statement declaring whether the work received funding and, if so, giving the grant number or funding body, as well as a competing interests declaration.
References References must be cited by numbers in square brackets. The reference list must include only cited published or accepted works, be numbered consecutively in citation order, include full bibliographic details, and provide full DOI links where available.
Figures & Tables In Word submissions, figures and tables must be placed in the body of the text where they are referenced, while LaTeX submissions must include figures and tables in a ZIP format. Figures and tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals, cited in consecutive numerical order, and accompanied by captions included in the manuscript text file.

Registered Report

The Stage 1 cover letter must include a brief scientific case for consideration and an estimated study completion timeline, and the Stage 2 cover letter must confirm that all non-pilot data were collected after in-principle acceptance and analysed as previously described while clearly noting any unforeseen changes in methods and analyses.

Manuscript Stage 1 submissions must include only Introduction, Methods, and Pilot Data where applicable, and Stage 2 manuscripts must include a Conclusions section. Pilot data are optional, additional analyses not included in the registered submission must be clearly justified and appropriately caveated, unplanned exploratory analyses must appear in a separate Results section, and declarations including funding, data availability, and competing interests must be included.
