Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter should be included with a concise introductory statement and suggested reviewers and associate editor. Cover letter should briefly describe the manuscript, provide relevant contextual information, suggest two to five reviewers with contact details and an associate editor, and explain any deviations from standard format.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Articles. Abstract must not exceed 260 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background and Aims, Methods, Results, Conclusion, and include 4-5 keywords.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 7,000 words inclusive of main text, references, and table/figure legends. Manuscript must include a title page and a "What You Need to Know" note with the headings BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT, NEW FINDINGS, LIMITATIONS, CLINICAL RESEARCH RELEVANCE, and BASIC RESEARCH RELEVANCE. Manuscript must include 4-5 keywords, a 25-30 word lay summary, a "What You Need to Know" note, a Data Transparency Statement on the title page, and any use of AI in writing must be disclosed before the References under the specified declaration heading.
References References must be cited with superscript Arabic numerals in order of appearance, include data references for underlying datasets, and end with the phrase "Author names in bold designate shared co-first authorship" with shared first authors shown in bold.
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include a total of seven tables with no panels and/or figures. Tables may be uploaded separately or included at the end of the manuscript, while figures must be submitted as separate attachments. Figures must be submitted as separate JPEG, TIFF, EPS, or PDF files at 300 PPI resolution.
