IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging encourages manuscripts on imaging of body structure, morphology and function, including cell and molecular imaging and all forms of microscopy. It publishes original contributions on medical imaging using modalities such as ultrasound, X-rays, magnetic resonance, radionuclides, microwaves, and optical methods, with emphasis on novel acquisition techniques, image processing and analysis, visualization, pattern recognition, machine learning, and related methods. The journal focuses on unifying medicine, biology, and imaging across instrumentation, hardware, software, mathematics, physics, biology, and medicine, and particularly encourages strong application papers that describe novel methods.

Regular Paper

Cover Letter A cover letter is required if the manuscript extends a previously published conference paper or was previously rejected by another journal. For conference-extended manuscripts, the cover letter PDF must give a detailed explanation of the new and substantial extensions, and for manuscripts previously rejected by another journal it must include an executive summary of significance, modifications made, and the original decision letter.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript Initial submissions must be limited to 10 pages including references. Figures and tables must be placed within the main text, author biographies must not be included, and conference-extended manuscripts must clearly reference the conference paper and describe the new extensions in the manuscript.
References References must use the author-name format with first initial and last name.
Figures & Tables All figures and tables must be placed within the main text.

Review Papers

Challenge Papers

Cover Letter A cover letter is required only if disclosing prior conference publication or prior rejection by another journal. For prior conference publication, the cover letter must disclose the conference version and highlight the differences, and for prior rejection by another journal it must include an executive summary of the manuscript’s significance, modifications made, and the original decision letter.

Manuscript Initial submissions must not exceed 14 pages including references. The manuscript must state the challenge objective as in the original call for participation, provide details on the evaluation, validation, and testing approach including gold standard establishment, and include a brief description of each participating method. The challenge paper checklist must be submitted as a Supporting Document, and each participating group must verify the manuscript content via a signed letter submitted as a Supporting Document.
