Original Article

Cover Letter A covering letter must state whether there are any other papers in press, submitted, or in preparation based on the same data set and provide details. The covering letter must disclose whether other papers in press, submitted, or in preparation are based on the same data set and provide details.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 300 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions, Keywords, and Abbreviations.
Manuscript Original Articles must not exceed 5,000 words excluding tables, figures, legends, references, and reference lists. The main text must be formatted as introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and conclusion. The manuscript must include a data availability statement, an IRB statement, and a key points and relevance text box of four or five bullet points totaling 80–120 words at the end of the manuscript.
References References must use APA style. References may be submitted in any style or format at first submission provided the style is used consistently throughout the manuscript.
Figures & Tables The manuscript may be submitted as a single file including figures and tables or as separate files, but figures must be supplied as separate files. Figures and tables must have legends, tables must include titles and footnotes, and figure legends must be provided beneath each image during upload and as a complete list in the manuscript.

Registered Reports

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 Registered Reports submissions. Stage 1 cover letters must include the scientific rationale, confirmation of approvals and support, confirmation that data collection and analysis will not begin before in-principle acceptance, the study timeline, data/code sharing commitments and any restrictions, commitment to submit regardless of results, and agreement to publication of a short summary if the paper is later withdrawn, while Stage 2 cover letters must state that no data were collected or analysed before in-principle acceptance and address data and code availability.
Abstract An abstract is required for both Stage 1 and Stage 2 Registered Reports submissions. Stage 1 abstracts must not exceed 200 words, and Stage 2 abstracts must not exceed 300 words. Stage 1 abstracts are unstructured descriptive summaries, whereas Stage 2 abstracts must be structured. Stage 2 abstracts must use the bolded headings Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions, and Keywords, while Stage 1 abstracts must describe the background, research questions, proposed methods, and significance of the study.
Manuscript Stage 1 manuscripts must not exceed 3000 words and Stage 2 manuscripts must not exceed 5000 words, excluding the title page, abstract, tables/figures, and references. Stage 1 manuscripts must include title page, abstract, introduction, methods, data and code availability statements, secondary data analyses/prior dataset access statement, references, acknowledgements, author contributions, and conflicts of interest sections, while Stage 2 manuscripts must additionally include results, discussion, tables, figures, and captions. Registered Reports manuscripts must include data and code availability statements, a secondary data analyses/prior access to datasets statement, acknowledgements, author contributions, conflicts of interest, and Stage 2 submissions must cite the Stage 1 article.
References References and in-text citations must use APA style.
Figures & Tables Stage 1 manuscripts may include a maximum of 3 tables/figures, and Stage 2 manuscripts may include a maximum of 5 tables/figures. Stage 1 tables and figures may be embedded within the manuscript or provided at the end. Figures may include captions, and Stage 2 manuscripts must include tables, figures, and captions sections.
