It publishes studies with clear clinical relevance that advance understanding of human disease mechanisms, with emphasis on investigative diagnostic, prognostic, and biomarker studies, and also includes editorials, review articles, commentaries, perspectives, and other features. The journal is indexed by PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus and is published by Wiley and The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.

Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. It must state that the manuscript is original unpublished work not under consideration elsewhere, declare any prior submissions that could be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication including previously published or presented abstracts, describe any posting on publicly available servers, confirm that all authors have agreed with the submission in its present form, and outline compliance with REMARK for tumour studies when applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be no more than 300 words. The abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript Original Articles must be up to 4000 words from the beginning of the Introduction to the end of the Discussion. Original Articles must be divided into Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion. The manuscript must include a title page with a succinct and unambiguous title, a short running title of fewer than 75 characters, author names and affiliations with corresponding author contact details, a conflict of interest statement, an acknowledgements section with funding sources, a statement of author contributions, and 3 to 10 keywords.
References Modified Vancouver used by the NLM in Index Medicus. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention, cited with Arabic numerals in square brackets, and for works with more than three authors only the first three authors should be listed followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include up to 6 figures. Figures must be uploaded as separate TIFF files and must not be embedded in the document, while tables must be placed on separate pages at the end of the main document. Figures and tables must be numbered consecutively in order of first citation, all tables and figures must be clearly referred to in the text, tables must have brief titles and figures concise informative legends, and the manuscript may include tables as appropriate.

Review Articles

Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract should preferably be fewer than 300 words and must not exceed 300 words. Unstructured.
Manuscript Review Articles are usually no more than 4000 words. The manuscript should include a title page, an unstructured abstract, keywords, a body with headings and sub-headings as appropriate, acknowledgements, author contributions, references, tables, and figure legends. The title page must include a conflict of interest statement, a word count for the main text, full affiliations, and corresponding author contact details, and the body must include an acknowledgements section with funding sources and a statement of author contributions.
References Modified Vancouver used by the NLM in Index Medicus. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first citation, cited in text as Arabic numerals in square parentheses, and for works with more than three authors only the first three authors should be listed followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Tables should appear after the body text, and figures must be uploaded as separate files rather than embedded in the document. Tables must have brief titles and be numbered consecutively, figures and tables must have legends, and previously published figures require acknowledgement and written permission.

Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be preferably fewer than 200 words and must not exceed 300 words. The abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript The manuscript text from the beginning of the Introduction to the end of the Discussion must be up to 1500 words. The body text must be divided into Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion sections, and Results and Discussion may be combined. The title page must include a conflict of interest statement, and after the body text an Acknowledgements section with funding sources plus a statement of author contributions must be provided.
References The manuscript may contain a maximum of 20 references. Modified Vancouver used by the NLM in Index Medicus. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first citation and identified in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in square brackets, with only the first 3 authors listed followed by et al. when there are more than 3 authors.
Figures & Tables Brief Reports may include up to 4 tables and figures. Figures must be uploaded as separate files and must not be embedded in the document, while tables must be typed on separate pages at the end of the main document. Figures must be uploaded as separate TIFF files, no figure may have more than 4 panels, and tables and figures must have concise legends.

The title page must include a data availability statement, a running title of 75 characters or less is required, and a statement of each author’s specific contribution must appear after the acknowledgements.
References Vancouver. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention, cited with Arabic numerals in square brackets, use the modified Vancouver style used by the NLM in Index Medicus, and list only the first 3 authors followed by et al. when there are more than 3 authors.
Figures & Tables Tables must be typed on separate pages at the end of the main document and figures must be uploaded as separate files rather than embedded in the document. Figures and tables must have legends, tables must have brief titles and be numbered consecutively, figures must be numbered consecutively, and previously published figures require acknowledgement of the original source and written permission from the copyright holder.
