Journal of Applied Physiology publishes original research and reviews on novel adaptive and integrative physiological mechanisms in humans and animals. It encourages manuscripts on acute and adaptive responses of organs, tissues, cells, and molecular pathways to environmental, physiological, and pathophysiological stressors, spanning a wide range of integrative and translational research topics related to disease mechanisms, mitigation strategies, and the promotion of health and well-being throughout the lifespan.

Abstract An abstract is required for Research Articles. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be unstructured as a single paragraph.
Manuscript Research Articles have no word limit. Research Articles must include an abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. The manuscript must include a 75-word New & Noteworthy statement and a Data Availability Statement.
References Research Articles have no reference limit. References must appear in the References section in numerical order.
Figures & Tables Research Articles have no figure or table limit. Figures and tables must include legends, and figures must faithfully represent the original data without moving, removing, introducing, obscuring, or enhancing specific features.

Manuscript Systematic Review has no word limit. Manuscript must include an abstract and full text with Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion as appropriate, and Systematic Review titles must identify the article as a systematic review or meta-analysis of the literature. Systematic Review must explicitly report the search strategy, inclusion and exclusion criteria, characteristics of extracted information, and risk of bias and limitations, and if a meta-analysis is included it must define the methods for data extraction and combining results with confidence intervals and measures of consistency.
References References must appear in the References section in numerical order.
