Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the official journal of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. It publishes original, peer-reviewed research and clinical reports on important trends and developments in physical medicine and rehabilitation and related fields, including the therapeutic utilization of physical, behavioral, and pharmaceutical agents in comprehensive care for individuals with chronic illness and disabilities. The journal began publication in 1920 and publishes monthly.

Original Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must identify the corresponding author, explain any prior publication of the same or substantially similar work, reference the manuscript ID number for resubmissions, include an itemized list of revisions for resubmissions, and be signed by the corresponding author confirming written permission for all named persons in the acknowledgments.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 275 words or fewer. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must include title-based heading with keywords and a structured format for Original Research.
Manuscript The body of the manuscript from Introduction through Conclusions must not exceed 3000 words. Original Research manuscripts must use Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions as level 1 headings and include a Study Limitations subsection at the end of the Discussion section. The manuscript must include keywords, a list of abbreviations, and a declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies if such tools were used.
References References must be numbered in the order first cited in the text. References must be numbered consecutively, cited in text with superscript Arabic numerals, list all authors or editors up to 6 and the first 3 followed by et al. when there are 7 or more, and include only retrievable material.
Figures & Tables Figures, tables, appendices, supplementary files, and other separate components must be uploaded as separate files, with each figure provided in a separate document and each table as a separate file. Figures and tables must be numbered consecutively in order of first citation, and tables must have titles, column headings, and footnoted abbreviations while figures must be labeled and accompanied by legends.

Review Articles (Meta-Analyses)

The manuscript must include a list of abbreviations, a declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies when used, and a completed reporting-guideline checklist.
References References must be numbered consecutively in order of first appearance, list all authors or editors up to 6 and the first 3 plus et al. for 7 or more, and include only retrievable sources.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables must be submitted separately from the main text, with each figure in a separate document and each table as a separate file. Figures and tables must be numbered consecutively in order of first citation, and tables must include titles and column headings while figures must have legends listed after the references.

References No more than 10 references. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first appearance in the text, and if there are seven or more authors only the first three authors are listed followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Brief Reports may include 1-2 figures or tables when using the 1200-word option. Figures, tables, appendices, supplementary files, and separate figure files must be uploaded separately from the blinded main text file. Figures and tables must be numbered consecutively, figures must be provided as separate files, and each table must be submitted as a separate file.

Letters To The Editor

Manuscript Letters to the Editor must be limited to roughly 500 words of text. The letter must directly relate to a published article in the journal. The manuscript may include 1 table and must not include an abstract.
References Letters to the Editor must have no more than 5 references. References must not include unpublished studies, and only material retrievable through standard literature searches may be cited.
Figures & Tables Letters to the Editor may include 1 table. Tables should be submitted as separate files, and each figure should be provided in a separate document if included. Figures and tables must follow the journal's general formatting rules, including separate figure legends, consecutively numbered tables and figures, and no more than 1 table for this article type.
