Mitochondrion is a peer-reviewed international research journal and the official journal of the Mitochondria Research Society, affiliated with the Japanese Society of Mitochondria Research and Medicine. Its scope covers basic science of mitochondria across all organisms, spanning basic research, pathology, and clinical aspects of mitochondrial diseases, and welcomes contributions from fields including evolution, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, toxicology, forensic science, programmed cell death, aging, cancer, and clinical features of mitochondrial diseases.

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract should not exceed 100 words.
Manuscript Manuscript must be divided into clearly defined and numbered sections and include the essential elements needed to convey the work, including Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Manuscript must include keywords and a declaration of generative AI use in a new section before the references when applicable.
References References may be submitted in any consistent style or format. References must be cited consistently between the text and reference list and, where applicable, include author names, title, year, volume or chapter, and article number or pagination.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables may be embedded next to the relevant text in the manuscript, and figures and tables must also be uploaded with their captions or titles. Each figure must have a caption and each table must include a title, description, and any footnotes.

Manuscript Review Articles may be of any length, although unusually long submissions should be discussed with the editor before submission. Article must be divided into clearly defined and numbered sections. Manuscript must include keywords and a declaration of generative AI use in a new section before the references if AI was used in manuscript preparation.
References References may be in any consistent style or format at submission. Every reference cited in the text must appear in the reference list, and every reference in the reference list must be cited in the text.
Figures & Tables Figures and tables in a single-file submission must be placed next to the relevant text in the manuscript, although tables may also be placed on separate pages at the end. Each figure and table must be numbered consecutively and include its caption or title, with tables submitted as editable text rather than images.
