Network Neuroscience

Network Neuroscience features innovative scientific work that advances understanding of network organization and function in the brain across all scales, from molecules and neurons to circuits and systems. The journal covers empirical and computational studies that record, analyze, or model relational data among elements of neurobiological systems, including neuronal signaling, functional connectivity, anatomical connections, and interactions among biomolecules or genes across all species, including humans.

Submission Instructions

Network Neuroscience accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Research

Cover Letter A brief cover letter is required on first submission. The cover letter should comment on the article’s significance and fit with the journal.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 200 words. Abstract should be unstructured within the overall Research article format.
Manuscript Research articles should aim for a maximum length of around 6000 words excluding references, with the Introduction not exceeding 800 words and the Discussion not exceeding 1600 words. Research articles should generally be arranged as Title/Authors/Affiliations/Contact Information/Keywords, Abstract, Author Summary, Introduction, Results, Discussion, Materials and Methods, Acknowledgements, and References, with no subheadings in the Introduction and main sections using Results, Discussion, and Methods or an appropriate alternative for Methods. Author contributions, an Author Summary limited to 125 words, Acknowledgments, up to 6 keywords, Technical Terms, and transparent disclosure of any AI tool use in the manuscript are required.
References References must be formatted in APA style. References must be complete, consistently formatted, include entries for any published data sets or tools cited in the text, and must not cite papers that are in press, submitted, or otherwise inaccessible.
Figures & Tables On first submission, all figures and tables must be integrated into the main text, while non-essential material should be provided as Supplementary Materials. Figures in the PDF article file must be legible and properly placed, corresponding figure legends and figures should be on the same page, and tables should appear inline.

Review

Cover Letter A brief cover letter is required on first submission. The cover letter should comment on the article’s significance and fit with the journal and must certify that the submission is original with no significant overlap, with all co-authors approving the submitted manuscript.
Abstract Abstracts must not exceed 200 words.
Manuscript Review articles are limited to 6000 words, excluding references and figure legends. Main text headings and subheadings should reflect the scientific content, and the review must include a Glossary box and a Future Directions box. The manuscript must include up to 6 keywords, an Author Summary, Acknowledgments, Technical Terms with definitions at the end of the manuscript after the references, and transparent disclosure of any AI tool use in the manuscript.
References References are limited to 140. References must be formatted in APA style. References must be complete and consistently formatted, and citations to papers that are in press, submitted, or otherwise inaccessible are not permitted.
Figures & Tables Review articles may include no more than 6 display items in total, including tables, figures, or boxes. On first submission, all figures and tables must be integrated into the main text. Corresponding figure legends and figures should be placed on the same page, and figures in the PDF article file must be legible and properly placed.

Abstract Abstract must not exceed 200 words.
Manuscript Total article length should not exceed 6000 words, with the Introduction limited to 800 words and the Discussion limited to 1600 words. Methods and Data articles may reposition and relabel the Results and Materials/Methods sections as appropriate. The manuscript must include up to 6 keywords, an Author Summary, Acknowledgments, author contributions, a Competing Interests section when applicable, and a Technical Terms list of around 10 key terms with definitions of 20 words or less placed after the references, with each term’s first occurrence in the text bolded.
