Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter signed by the corresponding author is required. The cover letter must state on behalf of all authors that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Articles. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Key Results, and Conclusions & Inferences.
Manuscript Original Articles must be no longer than 5000 words excluding acknowledgements and disclosures, references, tables, figures, table legends, and figure legends. Original Articles must be arranged as title page, abstract and keywords, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, funding, and disclosures, references, appendices, supporting information, tables, figure legends, and figures. The manuscript must include a Plain Language Summary of no more than 150 words, up to seven keywords, no more than three lay-person key points, a graphical abstract, a graphical summary before publication, and transparent description of any AI-generated content tools used in the Methods section.
References References must be numbered consecutively in order of appearance and cited in the text using Arabic superscript numerals.
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include no more than eight figures and tables combined in the regular edition of the journal. Figures must be supplied as separate files. Figure legends must be provided in the manuscript after the references and tables must be included with a title and footnotes.

Manuscript Review Articles must be limited to 5000 words. Review Articles must be arranged in the following order: title page, abstract and keywords, body of the article, acknowledgments, funding, and disclosures, references, tables, figure legends, and figures. The manuscript must include a Plain Language Summary of no more than 150 words, up to seven keywords, no more than three lay key points, a graphical abstract, and transparent disclosure of any AI-generated content tools used in the Methods section.
