Neuron publishes high-quality research across the full spectrum of the neurosciences, from molecular and cellular mechanisms in model organisms to systems-level studies of human cognition and behavior. Its scope includes molecular, cellular, and developmental neurobiology; psychiatric and neurological disease; systems neuroscience; perception, emotion, and higher cognitive processes; and theoretical and computational work relevant to artificial intelligence. The journal also publishes reviews and commentaries, including contributions exploring the interface between neuroscience, society, and emerging technologies.

Manuscript The main document must be under 7,000 words including main figure legends but excluding STAR Methods text, supplemental item legends, and references. Research articles must include the components in this order: Title, Author list, Author affiliations and footnotes, Contact information, Summary, Keywords, Introduction, Results, Discussion, Resource availability, Acknowledgments, Author contributions, Declaration of interests, Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, Supplemental information titles and legends, Figure and/or scheme titles and legends, Tables, STAR Methods, Resource identification initiative, and References. Research articles must include keywords, a Resource Availability section with the subsections lead contact, materials availability, and data and code availability, a Declaration of interests section, a Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies section, STAR Methods, and a Resource identification initiative section.
References References must be cited as consecutively numbered superscripts, and article references must include the author list, year, title, journal abbreviation, volume, page range, and DOI.
Figures & Tables Research articles may include no more than eight main figures and/or tables. Figure and scheme titles and legends and tables must be included in the main document, while main figures must be uploaded individually as separate files for final submission. Tables must be editable Word tables rather than images, and each figure file must contain all panels for that figure on a single page.
