Quality of Life Research is an international, multidisciplinary journal publishing original research, theoretical articles, and methodological reports on health-related quality of life across the health sciences. Its focus is on the quality-of-life aspects of treatment, care, and rehabilitation, and it also publishes editorials, correspondence, registered reports, and conference abstracts. All original work is subject to peer review for originality, scientific quality, and relevance to a broad readership.

Original Articles

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract Abstract is required and must be structured. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must be divided into Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 4,000 words, excluding the 250-word structured abstract, figures, tables, and references. Manuscript must include 4 to 6 keywords, a Plain English summary under the heading "Plain English summary," a heading titled 'Statements and Declarations' after the References section with Funding and Competing Interests statements, documentation of any LLM use in the Methods section or another suitable section, and a data availability statement.
References Citations must be numbered in square brackets in the text, and the reference list must contain only cited published or accepted works numbered consecutively with full DOI links included when available.
Figures & Tables Figures should be submitted within the body of the text unless file size causes upload problems, in which case large figures should be submitted separately. Figures and tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals, cited in consecutive numerical order in the text, and accompanied by concise captions, with figure captions included in the manuscript text file rather than in the figure files.

Registered Reports

Cover Letter A brief cover letter is required for initial Registered Report submissions and also for Stage 2 submissions. The Stage 1 cover letter must state that data collection has not started and that all necessary support and approvals are in place, and the Stage 2 cover letter must confirm that all non-pilot data were collected after in-principle acceptance and analysed as previously described while noting any unforeseen changes in methods and analyses.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. Abstract must be 150 to 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must be divided into Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript Stage 1 submissions must include fully written Background, Methods, and Analysis sections, while Stage 2 submissions must include Results and Discussion sections and a link to the approved registered Stage 1 protocol. Manuscripts must include 4 to 6 keywords, a 'Statements and Declarations' section after the references with Funding and Competing Interests statements, documentation of any LLM use in the Methods or similar section, and any additional unregistered analyses in a separate Results section titled 'Exploratory analyses'.
References References must use numbered citations in square brackets. Reference list entries must be numbered consecutively, include only works cited in the text that are published or accepted for publication, and include full DOI links when available.
