Submission Instructions

Brain Informatics accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in Brain Informatics, address any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved the submission, confirm the manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be 150 to 250 words.
Manuscript Manuscript must include a title page with the title, full author names and institutional addresses, corresponding author, and if applicable the collaboration group title, and it must contain a Declarations section with Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, and Acknowledgements, plus Authors' information if included. Manuscript must include three to ten keywords, document any use of a Large Language Model in the Methods section or suitable alternative, provide a list of abbreviations if abbreviations are used, and include 'Not applicable' under any non-relevant Declarations subsection.
References References may include only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts or items available on public e-print/preprint servers; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; and web links must be numbered and given in full in the reference list with site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Figure titles and legends must be provided in the main manuscript while figures are uploaded separately in cited order, and tables must be included in the main manuscript file, with larger tables allowed at the end of the text file if their placement is indicated in the text. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, individual figure files must not exceed 10 MB, figure titles must be no more than 15 words, figure legends and table legends must be no more than 300 words, table titles must be no more than 15 words, tables must not be submitted as figures, and additional files must not exceed 20 MB each.

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in Brain Informatics, address any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors have approved the submission, confirm the manuscript has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 150 to 250 words. The abstract structure is not specified.
Manuscript The manuscript must include a title page identifying the corresponding author, a Conclusions section, and a Declarations section. The manuscript must include three to ten keywords, define abbreviations at first use with a list of abbreviations if used, document any Large Language Model use in the Methods section or another suitable section, and include Declarations subsections for Availability of data and materials, Competing interests, Funding, Authors' contributions, and Acknowledgements with 'Not applicable' used when a subsection is irrelevant.
References Only published, in-press, or publicly available e-print/preprint articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts may be cited, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, and web references must be numbered and listed in full with site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Tables must be included in the main manuscript file, with tables larger than one page placed where indicated by the text, while figures must be uploaded separately and figure titles and legends must appear in the main manuscript rather than in the graphic file. Tables must not be submitted as figures and must use the word processor's Table object without color or shading, while figures must be closely cropped and multi-panel figures submitted as a single composite file.

Brief Reports

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in Brain Informatics, address any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved submission, confirm the manuscript content has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and name the special issue if applicable.
Abstract Abstract requirements are not specified.
Manuscript If additional material is provided, the manuscript must include a separate section listing each additional file’s name, format and file extension, title of data, and description of data.
References References may include only published or in-press articles, clinical trial registration records, abstracts, and public preprints/e-prints, unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must be excluded from the reference list, journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE, and URLs must appear as numbered references with full site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Figure titles and legends must be included in the main manuscript rather than the graphic file, tables shorter than one page may be placed within the manuscript, and tables longer than one page may be placed at the end with their intended placement indicated in the text. Figures must be numbered in order of first mention and uploaded in that order, multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, and tables must be numbered and cited sequentially in Arabic numerals and created using the word processor’s table object rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheet files.
