Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter should explain why the manuscript is suitable for publication and must disclose any third-party writing or editing assistance or submission by a non-author on behalf of the authors.
Abstract A structured abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 350 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions, with each section starting in a new paragraph.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 3,000 words, excluding the abstract, disclosure statements, author contribution statements, funding information, acknowledgments, tables, figure legends, and references. The manuscript must use the sections Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. The manuscript must include at least 5 keywords after the abstract and a section headed 'Statements and Declarations' at the end of the article with each required subheading, including 'Not applicable' where relevant.
References References must be cited in numerical order using superscript Arabic numerals outside punctuation and listed in sequential order with journal titles abbreviated according to PubMed/Medline style.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 10 tables and/or figures is allowed. High-resolution figure files must be uploaded as individual files, while editable tables may be uploaded as a single separate file or placed at the end of the manuscript and figure legends may be uploaded as a separate file or placed at the end of the manuscript. Figures must be numbered consecutively in the order they are cited in the text.
