Submission Instructions
Trends In Cognitive Sciences is an invitation-only journal. Submissions are accepted by invitation from the editorial board only. The following article types are accepted:
Review
Cover Letter
Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract
Abstract is required for Review articles. Abstract must be 100–120 words.
Manuscript
Main text must not exceed 4000 words. Manuscript must use informative bold headings, begin with a one- or two-paragraph introductory section under a short descriptive heading other than “Introduction,” and end with a section titled “Concluding Remarks” or “Concluding Remarks and Future Perspectives.” Review articles must include Highlights with 3–5 bullet points not exceeding 900 characters, an Outstanding Questions Box not exceeding 2000 characters and without references, at least two and no more than six keywords, a declaration of interests section, and a “Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process” section when applicable.
References
Review articles must not exceed 120 references. References must be numbered in square brackets in order of citation and listed in citation sequence rather than alphabetically.
Figures & Tables
Review articles may include up to six additional elements in total across figures, tables, and text boxes, with no more than four text boxes, and may include either one Key Figure or one Key Table but not both. Figures must be supplied as separate files rather than embedded in the main text, whereas tables must be prepared in Word and submitted within the main document. Figure legends must include a short explanatory title, fully explain the figure, and not exceed 250 words, while tables must have a single-sentence title and no legend.

Abstract
Opinion articles must include an abstract. Opinion abstracts must be between 100 and 120 words.
Manuscript
Opinion main text must not exceed 3500 words. Opinion articles must use a descriptive heading instead of 'Introduction,' clearly state the opinion in the opening section, use informative bold headings, and end with a section titled 'Concluding remarks' or 'Concluding remarks and future perspectives'. Opinion articles must include Highlights with 3 to 5 bullet points not exceeding 900 characters, an Outstanding Questions Box not exceeding 2000 characters and without references, at least two and no more than six keywords, and declarations of interests and any generative AI use in the manuscript text.
References
Opinion articles must not exceed 100 references. References must be numbered in square brackets in order of citation. References must be listed in citation order with one reference per number, while unpublished work, PhD theses, and website URLs must be cited only in the main text rather than in the reference list.
Figures & Tables
Opinion articles can include up to four additional elements drawn from figures, tables, and text boxes, may contain no more than four text boxes, and may include either one Key Figure or one Key Table but not both. Figures must be uploaded as separate files and not embedded in the main text document, whereas tables must be prepared in Word and submitted within the main document. Manuscript
Letter proposals must include the full text of the Letter and be fewer than 800 words, and any text box must not exceed 200 words. Letters are reserved for replying to an article previously published in Trends in Cognitive Sciences. Letters must include affiliation details for all authors, identify the corresponding author in the specified correspondence format, include two to six descriptive keywords, and add a declaration of interests section plus a declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process section when applicable.
References
Letters must not exceed 12 references. References must be numbered in square brackets in order of citation and listed in citation sequence rather than alphabetically, with URLs cited in the text and a Resources List added when more than two URLs are used.
Figures & Tables
Letters may include one additional element consisting of a figure, table, or text box. Letter figures must be submitted as separate files rather than embedded in the main text document, whereas Letter tables must be submitted within the main document rather than as separate files. Letter figure legends must have a short explanatory title and fully explain the figure without reference to the text, Letter tables must have a single-sentence title with no legend and must not be inserted as images, and figures or tables within a Letter text box must be numbered with Roman numerals.
