Original Research Report

Cover Letter If more than 40 references are included, the excess must be explained in the cover letter and may need further justification during review.
Abstract Original Research Reports require a structured abstract with no more than 400 words. For revised manuscripts, a Key Points summary with three one-sentence bullet points (Question, Findings, Meaning) must appear directly under the abstract.
Manuscript Total word count is limited to 4000 words, excluding abstract and references; the Introduction is limited to 400 words and the Discussion to 1000 words.
References Non–peer-reviewed preprints must not be listed as formal references, and retracted articles or those with statements of concern must not be cited. It is expected that manuscripts will contain no more than 40 references.
Figures & Tables Figures must be uploaded as separate files, with no more than 6 panels per figure and panels labeled with capital letters.

Narrative Review Article

Cover Letter Any addition or removal of an author during review or resubmission must be justified in the cover letter, with affected authors notified and documentation sent to the Editorial Office.
Abstract An unstructured abstract is required and must not exceed 400 words.
Manuscript Manuscripts must be arranged in a single file containing Title Page, Abstract when required, Body Text with References, followed by any tables, figure legends, figures, and supplemental digital content. A Narrative Review Article may contain up to 5000 words, not counting the Abstract and references.
References Up to 100 references are allowed; retracted articles, articles with statements of concern, and non–peer-reviewed preprints must not be cited as formal references.
Figures & Tables A Narrative Review Article may include up to 6 tables and/or figures, with additional material provided as online supplemental content when appropriate.

Systematic Review Article

Cover Letter Any addition or removal of an author during review or resubmission must be justified in the cover letter, with written notification and documentation provided to the Editorial Office.

Manuscript A Systematic Review Article contains up to 5000 words, not counting the Abstract and references.
References A Systematic Review Article may include up to 100 references; retracted articles, articles with statements of concern, and non–peer-reviewed preprints must not be cited as formal references.
Figures & Tables A Systematic Review Article may include up to 6 tables and/or figures, with additional material provided as online supplemental content when appropriate.

Meta-Analysis

Figures & Tables A Meta-Analysis may include up to 6 tables and/or figures; online supplemental material can be provided when appropriate.

Editorial

Cover Letter A cover letter is generally required only to justify any addition or removal of an author during review or resubmission, with documentation sent to the Editorial Office.
Abstract An Editorial must not include an abstract.
Manuscript An Editorial may contain up to 3000 words, not counting references, and must include a descriptive title but no abstract; no specific section structure is specified in the submission guidelines for this journal.
References References must follow AMA style (numbered in order of appearance with superscript Arabic numerals, using PubMed journal abbreviations), and an Editorial may include up to 20 references.
Figures & Tables An Editorial may include at most 1 table and/or 1 figure; tables must follow AMA table format in Word and figures must be uploaded as separate files, with tables placed after the references in the manuscript or uploaded separately.
