Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required for Original Articles. The cover letter must describe the study, explain why it is being submitted to Annals, and include the complete contact information of the corresponding author.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Articles and must be submitted in the Submit Abstract section rather than included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately. The abstract must not exceed 255 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 4,000 words. The manuscript must be organized into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, with any additional headings used only as subheadings. eSupplement material is permitted only for Original Articles and must be submitted as a single DOC file under the eSupplement submission type, with all elements appearing only in that file and cited in the main text in numerical order.
References References must be cited with superscript Arabic numerals, numbered consecutively in order of citation, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, list all authors up to 6, and for more than 6 authors list the first 6 followed by et al.
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include no more than 8 tables and figures combined without prior approval of the Editor-in-Chief. Figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately, whereas tables may be submitted in a single DOC table file if not included in the manuscript file. Tables and figures must be numbered in Arabic numerals in the order cited in the text, and each table or figure must have a concise heading or legend of no more than 50 words.
