Original Articles
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required for Original Articles. The cover letter must describe the study, explain why it is being submitted to Annals, and include the complete contact information of the corresponding author.
Abstract
A structured abstract is required for Original Articles and must be submitted in the Submit Abstract section rather than included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately. The abstract must not exceed 255 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Background, Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript
The manuscript must not exceed 4,000 words. The manuscript must be organized into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion, with any additional headings used only as subheadings. eSupplement material is permitted only for Original Articles and must be submitted as a single DOC file under the eSupplement submission type, with all elements appearing only in that file and cited in the main text in numerical order.
References
References must be cited with superscript Arabic numerals, numbered consecutively in order of citation, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, list all authors up to 6, and for more than 6 authors list the first 6 followed by et al.
Figures & Tables
Original Articles may include no more than 8 tables and figures combined without prior approval of the Editor-in-Chief. Figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately, whereas tables may be submitted in a single DOC table file if not included in the manuscript file. Tables and figures must be numbered in Arabic numerals in the order cited in the text, and each table or figure must have a concise heading or legend of no more than 50 words.
Review Articles
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required. Cover letter must describe the study, explain why it is being submitted to Annals, and provide the complete contact information of the corresponding author.
Abstract
An abstract is required. Abstract must be 255 words or fewer. Abstract does not need to be structured.
Manuscript
Manuscript must not exceed 4,000 words. Manuscript must be organized into Introduction, applicable body headings, and Conclusion. Manuscript must include Key Messages in 4-6 bullet points.
References
References must be numbered consecutively in order of citation, cited in the text with superscript Arabic numerals, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, list all authors up to 6, and for more than 6 authors list the first 6 followed by "et al.".
Figures & Tables
Review Articles must include a combined minimum of 2 and maximum of 8 tables and/or figures. Figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately, whereas tables may be submitted in the manuscript file or together as a single DOC table file. Tables and figures must be numbered in the order cited in the text and each must have a concise heading or legend of no more than 50 words.
Letters
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required. Cover letter must describe the study, explain why it is being submitted to Annals, and include the complete contact information of the corresponding author.
Abstract
Abstract must not be included in the manuscript file.
Manuscript
Letters may not exceed 1,000 words. Letters may not contain a salutation. The manuscript file must not contain footnotes, endnotes, acknowledgments, or eSupplement material.
References
Letters may have a maximum of 10 references. References must be numbered consecutively in the order cited, use superscript Arabic numerals in the text, abbreviate journal names according to Index Medicus, list up to 6 authors, and for more than 6 list the first 6 followed by "et al.".
Figures & Tables
Letters may include only a single-panel figure or a single-panel table. Figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately, whereas tables may be submitted in the manuscript file or as a single DOC table file. Figures and tables must be numbered in the order cited in the text and each must have a concise heading or legend of no more than 50 words.
Correspondences
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required. Cover letter must describe the study, explain why it is being submitted to Annals, and include the complete contact information of the corresponding author.
Abstract
Abstract must not be included in the manuscript file.
Manuscript
Correspondences are limited to 500 words. Correspondences must begin with the salutation "To the Editor" and cite the previously published article in the text.
References
Correspondences may include up to 10 references. References must be numbered consecutively in order of citation, cited in the text with superscript Arabic numerals, use Index Medicus journal abbreviations, list up to 6 authors, and use "et al." after the first 6 when there are more than 6 authors.
Figures & Tables
Figures and tables are not allowed in Correspondences.

Manuscript

Manuscript must include Key Messages in 4-6 bullet points, and a separate DOC file must include 5 multiple-choice questions with a single correct answer and 2-3 supporting references for each question.

Figures & Tables
CME Review Articles must include a combined total of 2 to 8 tables and/or figures. Figures may be included in the manuscript file or uploaded separately, while tables may be submitted under the file type "Table" instead of being included in the manuscript file if all tables are provided in a single DOC file. Figures and tables must be numbered in Arabic numerals in the order cited in the text, and each figure or table must have a concise heading or description of no more than 50 words.
