Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required and must state that the report is not under consideration elsewhere and that all named authors have agreed to its submission. The cover letter must confirm that the report is not under consideration for publication elsewhere and that all named authors have agreed to its submission.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be a summary of 300 words or less. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Patients and methods, Results, and Conclusion(s).
Manuscript Manuscript should generally be no longer than 4500 words excluding the manuscript heading, abstract, acknowledgements, funding, and references, with each table or figure including legends, captions, and footnotes counting as 150 words toward the total. Manuscript should generally be structured as introduction; methods-patients and methods-materials and methods-etc; results; discussion; acknowledgements; funding; disclosure; references. Manuscript must include highlights at submission with 3 to 5 bullet points of no more than 125 characters each covering only the core results, and authors using generative AI in the writing process must add a statement in a section entitled 'Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process' before the references list.
References References are unrestricted in number and do not contribute to the total word count. References must be listed in numbered order following Index Medicus style. In-text citations should use superscript reference numbers after author names, the reference list should list all authors when there are three or fewer and only the first three followed by et al. when there are four or more, and every text citation must appear in the reference list and vice versa.
Figures & Tables Original Articles should have no more than 6 tables and figures in total recommended. Each illustration must be submitted as a separate file with captions provided separately, while online-only supplementary material should be uploaded in separate files and described in the manuscript. Supplementary tables or figures must be named and numbered as S1, S2, etc. in both the manuscript and the file.

The abstract is generally unstructured, except reviews involving data synthesis such as systematic reviews and meta-analyses should use a structured abstract. For data-synthesis reviews, the abstract should use headings such as Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, and Conclusions, and Reviews may substitute Design or Materials and methods for Patients and methods.
Manuscript Review manuscripts must not exceed 5000 words excluding the manuscript heading, abstract, references, acknowledgements, funding, tables, and figures. Articles should be divided into clearly defined sections, and the first page must contain the article type, title, author list, affiliation list, and manuscript social media information. Reviews require highlights at submission consisting of 3 to 5 bullet points of no more than 125 characters each, and any use of generative AI in writing must be disclosed in a section titled 'Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process' placed before the References list.
References References are unrestricted in number and are not counted in the total word count. References should follow numbered Index Medicus style. References must be listed in numbered order, cite all authors when there are three or fewer, and list the first three authors followed by et al. when there are four or more.

The title should either match the related Original Article or be a summarised version when the letter relates to a previous publication. References Letters To The Editor may include a maximum of five references. References must be listed in numbered order following Index Medicus style. In-text citations should use superscript reference numbers, references to abstracts and Letters To The Editor must be identified as such, and reference lists should name all authors when there are three or fewer or the first three followed by et al. when there are four or more.
Figures & Tables Letters To The Editor may include a maximum of one table or one figure if necessary. Each illustration must be submitted as a separate file with captions provided separately, while tables must be submitted as editable text.
