Original Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required and must state that the report is not under consideration elsewhere and that all named authors have agreed to its submission. The cover letter must confirm that the report is not under consideration for publication elsewhere and that all named authors have agreed to its submission.

Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be a summary of 300 words or less. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Patients and methods, Results, and Conclusion(s).

Manuscript Manuscript should generally be no longer than 4500 words excluding the manuscript heading, abstract, acknowledgements, funding, and references, with each table or figure including legends, captions, and footnotes counting as 150 words toward the total. Manuscript should generally be structured as introduction; methods-patients and methods-materials and methods-etc; results; discussion; acknowledgements; funding; disclosure; references. Manuscript must include highlights at submission with 3 to 5 bullet points of no more than 125 characters each covering only the core results, and authors using generative AI in the writing process must add a statement in a section entitled 'Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process' before the references list.

References References are unrestricted in number and do not contribute to the total word count. References must be listed in numbered order following Index Medicus style. In-text citations should use superscript reference numbers after author names, the reference list should list all authors when there are three or fewer and only the first three followed by et al. when there are four or more, and every text citation must appear in the reference list and vice versa.

Figures & Tables Original Articles should have no more than 6 tables and figures in total recommended. Each illustration must be submitted as a separate file with captions provided separately, while online-only supplementary material should be uploaded in separate files and described in the manuscript. Supplementary tables or figures must be named and numbered as S1, S2, etc. in both the manuscript and the file.
