Blood Advances accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Regular Article

Cover Letter A cover letter is required only to disclose any involvement of medical writers or researchers to the Editor-in-Chief. The cover letter must disclose any involvement of medical writers or researchers in writing the article.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be unstructured and written as a continuous narrative.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 4,000 words, counting only the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. The manuscript should be ordered as Abstract, Key Points, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Authorship Contributions, Disclosure of Conflicts of Interest, References, Tables, Figure Legends, Figures, and Visual Abstract. The manuscript must include 1 to 2 Key Points of no more than 140 characters each, a Visual Abstract, and a subsection titled “Data Sharing Statement” on the title page that explains database access and provides a contact person for nonpublic data.
References Regular Articles are recommended to include no more than 100 references. References must follow AMA guidelines when no specific style guidance is provided and be formatted according to the Blood Advances Style Guide. References must be listed in numerical order at the end of the article according to first citation in the text, with text citations given as superscript numbers.
Figures & Tables Regular Articles are limited to 7 figures. Figures, tables, figure legends, and the Visual Abstract should appear after the references in the manuscript order, and supplemental data must be submitted with the original manuscript for peer review. The Visual Abstract must be submitted with the initial submission as a PPT file and must be clear, concise, original, minimally text-based, non-tabular, and free of trade names, logos, or trademarked images.

Review Article

Systematic Review

Cover Letter A cover letter is required if medical writers or researchers were involved in writing the Systematic Review. The cover letter must disclose any involvement of medical writers or researchers in writing the Systematic Review to the Editor-in-Chief.
Abstract An abstract is required for Systematic Reviews. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be written as a continuous narrative and must not be broken into subheadings.
Manuscript Main text must not exceed 4,000 words, counting only the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. The manuscript must be organized as Title Page, Key Points, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, Authorship Contributions, Conflict of Interest Disclosures, References, Tables, Figure Legends, and Figures. Any involvement of medical writers or researchers in writing the Systematic Review must be clearly defined and disclosed in the Authorship and/or Acknowledgments section, and a data sharing statement must be included.
References References must follow AMA guidelines when no specific style guidance is provided and be formatted according to the Blood Advances Style Guide. References must be listed in numerical order at the end of the article according to order of citation in the text, with citations shown as superscript numbers.
Figures & Tables Systematic Reviews are limited to 7 figures. Sequences must be prepared as figures rather than tables.

Research Letter

Abstract Abstract is not required because Research Letters have no abstract.
Manuscript Research Letters must not exceed 1,200 words of text. Research Letters must include a data sharing statement, and a Visual Abstract may be included with the submission.
References Research Letters may include no more than 25 references. References must follow AMA guidelines unless specific style guidance is provided, and they must be formatted according to the Blood Advances Style Guide. References must be listed in numerical order at the end of the article according to order of citation, with superscript numbers used for in-text citations.
Figures & Tables Research Letters may include up to 2 figures or tables.

Figures & Tables Clinical Guidelines have no figure limit.
