Cephalalgia publishes original peer reviewed papers on all aspects of headache and provides an international forum for original research papers, review articles and short communications. It is published monthly on behalf of the International Headache Society, and rapid review averages 2 ½ weeks from author submission.

Review Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief is required and must indicate that the manuscript is intended for the “Headache and Comorbidities” special issue. The cover letter must state that the submission is original work, that the authors hold the rights and have obtained necessary permissions, and that the manuscript is for the “Headache and Comorbidities” special issue.
Abstract An abstract is required for Review Articles. The abstract must not exceed 400 words. Systematic Review Articles require a structured abstract, whereas Narrative Review Articles require an unstructured abstract.
Manuscript The main text should be up to 5,000 words. Systematic reviews must describe the methods used for locating, selecting, extracting, and synthesizing data. The manuscript must include acknowledgements, funding, a declaration of conflicting interests, keywords, and any AI-use disclosure in the acknowledgements.
References Review Articles should contain about 100 selected references, mostly papers published in the last five years. References must use Sage Vancouver style. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention and cited in the text, tables, and legends using Arabic numerals in parentheses.
Figures & Tables Figures and images must be uploaded as separate files, figure legends must remain in the main body file, and the main body must not contain figures or tables. All tables and figures must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text in full as Table and Figure.

Original Research Papers

Cover Letter A cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief of Cephalalgia is required and must indicate that the manuscript is intended for the “Headache and Comorbidities” special issue. The cover letter must state that the submission is original work, that the authors hold the rights in the work, and that necessary permissions for reproduced copyrighted material have been obtained.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Original Research Papers. The structured abstract must be no more than 400 words. The abstract must be structured. The structured abstract must use the headings Aim, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript The main text should be 4,000-4,500 words in length. The manuscript must be organized into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. The manuscript must include two to five study highlights bullet points with a total limit of 60 words placed after the conclusion and before the references.
References Original Research Papers should contain no more than about 45 selected references. References must follow Sage Vancouver style. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention and cited in the text, tables, and legends using Arabic numerals in parentheses.
Figures & Tables Original Research Papers usually may include up to 6-8 individual figures and tables. Figures and images must be uploaded as separate files, figure legends must remain in the main body file, and the main body must not contain figures or tables. All tables and figures must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text with Table and Figure written out in full.

Brief Communications

Cover Letter A cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief is required and must indicate that the manuscript is intended for the “Headache and Comorbidities” special issue. The cover letter must state that the work is original, that the authors hold the rights and obtained necessary permissions, and that all authors agree to the authorship list.
Abstract A structured abstract is required for Brief Communications. The structured abstract must be up to 200 words. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Aim, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript The main text should be up to 1,500 words. The manuscript must be organized into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. The manuscript must include declarations of funding and conflicting interests, and any use of AI to polish or translate text must be stated in the Acknowledgements section.
References Brief Communications must contain no more than 20 selected references. References must use Sage Vancouver style. References must be numbered consecutively in the order first mentioned and cited in the text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses.
Figures & Tables Brief Communications may include up to 2 figures and 1 table. Figures must be uploaded as separate files, figure legends must remain in the main body file, and the main body must not contain figures or tables. Tables and figures must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text as Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Figure 2, and so on.

Letter To The Editor

Cover Letter A cover letter addressed to the Editor-in-Chief of Cephalalgia is required. The cover letter must indicate that the manuscript is for the “Headache and Comorbidities” special issue and include statements of originality, rights/permissions, and first-publication status.
Abstract An abstract is not required for Letter To The Editor submissions.
Manuscript Letter To The Editor submissions must be no more than 750 words. Letter To The Editor submissions should discuss articles published in Cephalalgia. The manuscript must include acknowledgements, funding, and a declaration of conflicting interests, and any AI use for polishing or translation must be stated in the Acknowledgements section.
References Letter To The Editor submissions must contain no more than 5 selected references. References must use Sage Vancouver style. References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention and cited with Arabic numerals in parentheses.
