Critical Review
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state authorship originality and exclusive submission, confirm all co-authors approved and accept responsibility for the paper, explain why the manuscript should be published and its novel value to readers, specify the preferred article format, and justify any excess length or APC waiver request.
Abstract
An abstract is required as an unstructured summary. The summary must be less than 300 words. The abstract must be unstructured. No mandatory headings for the summary are specified.
Manuscript
Reviews and commentaries should generally be around 4,000 to 5,000 words, and longer manuscripts require justification. The review should begin with an unstructured summary and otherwise has no designated body structure. The summary must be followed by 3 to 6 key words, a Plain Language Summary of 2 to 4 sentences under 100 words must appear at the end of the abstract, and the manuscript must include the exact ethical publication statement provided.
References
The number of references is not limited. References must follow a modified Vancouver style. References must be cited with superscript numbers in numerical order, use PubMed journal title abbreviations, and list the first six authors followed by et al.
Figures & Tables
No maximum number of figures or tables is specified, and ample figures and tables are encouraged. Figure legends must appear at the end of the main text document, all tables must be grouped at the end of the manuscript and not embedded in the text file, and figures must be submitted as separate files rather than embedded in the main text. The manuscript must be limited to 4,000 words. The manuscript should include Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions, with the Introduction typically under 600 words and the Discussion typically under 1,200 words. The manuscript must include 3 to 6 key words after the summary, 3 to 5 key bullet points of no more than 140 characters each after the main text, a conflict of interest disclosure statement at the end of the paper, and the exact ethical publication affirmation statement at the end of the paper.
