Submission Instructions

Genome Biology and Evolution accepts the following article types. Click on an article type to view submission instructions.

Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required as one of the three PDF files for submission. The cover letter must briefly explain the paper’s context and relevance to GBE readers, disclose any use of AI, and confirm that all authors have read and approved the final manuscript.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 250 words. The abstract must be presented as a standalone section at the start of the manuscript. The manuscript must include an Abstract heading followed by a Significance statement heading.
Manuscript Total text length must be 10000 words excluding references. The manuscript should be divided in this order into headed sections: Abstract, Significance statement, Introduction, Results, Discussion, Materials and Methods, Data Availability. The manuscript must include a 150-word significance statement, up to six keywords below the abstract, and tables and/or figures.
References Articles may include a maximum of 100 references. References must follow GBE style. In-text citations must use author-date format, and the reference list must be alphabetized with all authors listed for five or fewer authors or the first author followed by et al. for more than five authors.
Figures & Tables Articles may include a maximum of 8 tables and figures in total. Tables and figures must be included inline in the manuscript, while supplementary tables and supplementary figure legends must be uploaded separately as supplementary files and not placed in the manuscript. Figure legends must be included at the end of the manuscript text, and tables must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and include a brief descriptive title.

Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter is required as one of the three PDF files submitted. The cover letter must briefly explain the paper’s context and relevance to GBE readers, disclose any use of AI, and confirm that all authors have read and approved the final manuscript.
Abstract Reviews must include an abstract. The abstract must be 250 words. The abstract is part of a required headed section sequence and no structured format is specified. The manuscript must be divided in order into the headed sections Abstract, Significance statement, and Main Text.
Manuscript Reviews must have a total text length of 10000 words excluding references. Reviews should be divided into the following headed sections in order: Abstract, Significance statement, Main Text. The manuscript must include a significance statement of 150 words and up to six keywords below the abstract.
References Reviews may include a maximum of 100 references. References must use GBE style. In-text citations must use author-date format and the reference list must be alphabetical, listing all authors for five or fewer authors and the first author followed by et al. for more than five authors.
Figures & Tables Reviews may include a maximum of 8 tables and figures in total. The initial submission must be a single PDF with tables and figures placed in line with the text. Figure legends must be included at the end of the manuscript text and each table must be self-explanatory with a brief descriptive title.

Letters

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must briefly explain the paper’s context and relevance to GBE readers, disclose any use of AI including proofreading, and confirm that all authors have read and approved the final manuscript.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must be 250 words. Abstract must be presented as a headed section rather than a structured abstract with named subsections. Abstract must appear as the first headed section, followed by Significance Statement, Main Text, and Data Availability.
Manuscript Total text length must not exceed 2500 words excluding references. Letters should be divided in order into the headed sections Abstract, Significance Statement, Main Text, and Data Availability. Manuscript must include a significance statement of 150 words.
References Letters may include a maximum of 50 references. References must use GBE style. In-text citations must use author-date format, and the reference list must be alphabetized with all authors listed for five or fewer authors or the first author followed by et al. for more than five.
Figures & Tables Letters may include a maximum of 4 tables and figures combined. Tables and figures must be included in line with the text in the manuscript, but supplementary tables and supplementary figure legends must be uploaded separately as supplementary files and not placed in the manuscript. Figure legends must be included at the end of the manuscript text, and tables must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and include a brief descriptive title.

Genome Resources

Cover Letter A cover letter is required as a separate PDF file. The cover letter must briefly explain the paper’s context and relevance to GBE readers, disclose any use of AI, and confirm that all authors have read and approved the final manuscript.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 250 words. The abstract should appear as a single unstructured section. No abstract subheadings are specified.
Manuscript Total text length must be 2500 words excluding references. The manuscript must be divided in this order into Abstract, Significance Statement, Introduction, Results and Discussion, Materials and Methods, and Data Availability. The manuscript must include a 150-word significance statement and a Data Availability section containing accession numbers.
References A maximum of 50 references is allowed. References must use GBE style with author-date citations. References must be listed alphabetically at the end, with all authors named for five or fewer authors and only the first author followed by et al. for more than five authors.
Figures & Tables A maximum of 2 tables and figures in total is allowed. Tables and figures must be included in line with the text in the initial manuscript PDF, and genome assembly statistics must be summarized in a table in the main text or supplement. Analyses, tables, and figures must focus on genome quality and include only concise discussion of insights from the new genome resources.
