International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity is an open access, peer-reviewed journal devoted to advancing understanding of the behavioral aspects of diet and physical activity through epidemiological, behavioral, theoretical, and methodological research. It prioritises randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses, and observational studies, and also considers strong methodological papers, rigorous qualitative studies, debate papers, and commentaries. It publishes pilot studies only in exceptional circumstances and does not publish protocol papers or letters to the editors.

Research

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. Cover letter must explain why the manuscript should be published in the journal, address any issues relating to journal policies, declare any potential competing interests, confirm all authors approved submission, confirm the content has not been published or submitted elsewhere, and provide a rationale for the manuscript’s novelty, relevance to the journal, and contribution to the field or evidence base.
Abstract An abstract is required. Abstract must not exceed 350 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must include the headings Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions, and articles reporting results of a health care intervention on human participants must also include a Trial registration section with the registration number and date and the words 'retrospectively registered' if applicable.
Manuscript Articles exceeding 5000 words are rarely published. Manuscript must include a title page with a title including study design if appropriate, full author names and institutional addresses, the corresponding author, a Methods section including aim, design and setting, participant or material characteristics, processes/interventions/comparisons, and a Declarations section with required subheadings retained even when marked 'Not applicable'. Manuscript must include three to ten keywords, a Declarations section, a list of abbreviations if abbreviations are used, documentation of any Large Language Model use in the Methods or suitable alternative section, and recruitment, representativeness, analysed-versus-recruited sample, and missing-data materials as an additional file for empirical studies.
References References must follow Vancouver style. Only published, in-press, or publicly available preprint articles, clinical trial registration records, and abstracts may be cited; unpublished abstracts, unpublished data, and personal communications must not appear in the reference list; journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE; and URLs must be numbered and included in the reference list with full site title, URL, and access date.
Figures & Tables Figure titles and legends must be provided in the main manuscript while figures are uploaded separately, tables under one page may be placed within the manuscript, and larger tables may be placed at the end with callouts in the text. Multi-panel figures must be submitted as a single composite file, tables must be created using the word processor’s table function rather than embedded as figures or spreadsheets, and footnotes must be used instead of endnotes.

References References must follow Vancouver style. Web links and URLs must be cited with a reference number and included in full in the reference list with the site title, URL, and access date, and journal abbreviations must follow Index Medicus/MEDLINE.
