Journal of Renal Nutrition is the official journal of the Council on Renal Nutrition of the National Kidney Foundation and the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism. It is devoted exclusively to renal nutrition science and renal dietetics, with content for nutritionists, physicians, and researchers working in nephrology. The journal publishes state-of-the-art reviews, original research, articles on clinical management and education of patients, current literature reviews, and nutritional analyses of clinically relevant food products.

Original Research Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state the main aspects of the research findings and identify the name of the corresponding author.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must be 250 words or fewer. The abstract must be structured. The abstract must use the headings Objective, (Design and) Methods, Results, and Conclusion.
Manuscript The manuscript should be 2,500 to 4,000 words excluding references. The manuscript must be organized as title page, support and financial disclosure, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, practical application, acknowledgments, references, tables, and legends and figures. The manuscript must include a Practical Application section of about 2 to 3 sentences and an AI-use declaration at the end of the manuscript before the references when generative AI tools were used.
References References must follow American Medical Association (AMA) style. References must be numbered in order of appearance using superscript numbers, listed at the end in citation order, and list up to 6 authors or editors before using the first 3 followed by 'et al.' if there are more than 6.
Figures & Tables Original Research Articles should include 2 to 6 tables and illustrations. Figures and tables must be uploaded as separate files and not embedded in the manuscript file. Each figure and each table must be on a separate page, numbered consecutively, and each table must include a title.

Reviews

Cover Letter A cover letter is required. The cover letter must state the main aspects of the article's findings and identify the name of the corresponding author.
Abstract An abstract is required. The abstract must not exceed 150 words. The abstract must be unstructured. The abstract must clearly state the purpose of the review, the methodology employed, brief findings, and conclusion.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 4,500 words excluding references, tables/figures, and the title page. The manuscript must include an introduction and purpose, a logically ordered body with appropriate headings and subheadings, and conclusions specifying needs for further research. Approximately five keywords should appear at the end of the abstract, and any use of generative AI tools in manuscript preparation must be declared at the end of the manuscript before the references list.
References References must follow American Medical Association (AMA) style. References must be numbered in order of appearance using superscript numbers, listed at the end in citation order, use PubMed journal abbreviations, list up to 6 authors or editors and if more than 6 give the first 3 followed by 'et al.,' include the issue number after the volume number for journal articles, and provide inclusive page numbers for complete articles.
Figures & Tables The total number of tables and figures must not exceed 6. Figures and tables must be uploaded as separate files and not embedded in the manuscript file. Reviews must include relevant tables and/or figures, with each figure and each table provided on a separate page and numbered consecutively in the order cited.
