Original Investigations

Cover Letter Cover letter is required and must state that the paper is not under consideration elsewhere, that none of its contents have been previously published, that all authors have read and approved the manuscript, and disclose any potential conflicts of interest or explicitly state none. Cover letter must include the contribution of each author, specify the corresponding author, denote ethical approval, and may request expedited review with a rationale.
Abstract Abstract is required. Abstract must be structured and must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must use the headings Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 5,000 words including text from the introduction through the conclusion, references, and figure legends. Text must be structured as Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions, and must include a study limitations section at the end of the Discussion. Manuscript must include Clinical Perspectives after the text and before the references, a Central Illustration with a title and 50 to 100 word legend, up to 6 keywords after the abstract, and a separate abbreviations list of up to 10 items following the abstract.
References References must be numbered consecutively in order of first mention and cited in the text with numerals in parentheses, listing all authors if 6 or fewer or the first 3 followed by et al if more than 6.
Figures & Tables There is no figure or table limit, and a Central Illustration is required. Figures and tables should be cited in numerical order in the text, with the Central Illustration legend listed first among figure legends unless it is an existing figure. Central Illustration must have a title of no more than 10 words and a combined title-and-caption legend of 50 to 100 words.

Abstract Short-form manuscripts do not require an abstract, whereas long-form manuscripts must include an abstract. For long-form manuscripts, the abstract must be no more than 150 words. For long-form manuscripts, the abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript Short-form manuscripts must not exceed 2,000 words and long-form manuscripts must not exceed 10,000 words, in both cases including text from the introduction to conclusion, references, and figure legends. Short-form manuscripts must not use subheadings within the text.
