Articles

Cover Letter A cover letter should be included with the submission. Cover letter should describe the conceptual advance of the work, related or competing papers in press or under consideration elsewhere, conflicts of interest, whether the submission responds to a presubmission inquiry, and whether original data are archived and accessible for editorial review.
Abstract An abstract is required for submission. Abstract must not exceed 160 words. Abstract should be unstructured.
Manuscript Articles should be no more than 40,000 characters excluding spaces, figure legends, methods, references, and tables. Manuscript should include a Results section divided into subheadings and a comprehensive Materials and methods section, with supplemental Materials and methods not permitted. Manuscript should include a short running title, a title under 100 characters including spaces, an approximately 40-word summary statement for the online table of contents, a short summary paragraph of all supplemental material at the end of Materials and methods, and an alphabetical list of nonstandard abbreviations used in the paper.
References References for Articles are unlimited. In-text citations should use Harvard style. References should be formatted according to the reference guidelines and listed alphabetically by the first author's last name.
Figures & Tables Articles may include up to 10 figures and/or tables. Tables should be submitted as individual Word or Excel files and may not be submitted as images. Each figure or table must have a number and title or legend, figures must be cited in numerical order in the text, and scale bar measurements and symbol definitions must be included in figure legends where applicable.

Review

Manuscript Review articles are usually 6,000–7,000 words in length. A summary statement of approximately 40 words for the online table of contents is required, and supplemental text is not permitted other than figure and video legends.

Figures & Tables Reviews must include three to four figures and/or tables. Tables should be submitted as individual Word or Excel files. Each table must include a table number and title.

Figures & Tables The article may include up to five figures and/or tables and up to three supplemental figures. Tables should be submitted as individual Word or Excel files. Each table must include a table number and title.
