The Journal of Gastroenterology is the official publication of the Japanese Society of Gastroenterology and publishes Original Articles, Review Articles, Letters to the Editors, and other articles on all aspects of gastroenterology. It welcomes significant contributions relating to basic research, theory, and practice, and has an international editorial board. Peer review is conducted using Editorial Manager® and is supported by a database of international experts shared with Clinical Journal of Gastroenterology.

Review Articles

Cover Letter Cover Letter requirements are not specified.
Abstract An unstructured abstract is required for Review Articles. The abstract must not exceed 250 words. The abstract must be unstructured.
Manuscript The manuscript must not exceed 6000 words excluding references. The manuscript body must be divided into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. The title page must state the manuscript word count, the manuscript must include a statement identifying who had the idea for the article, who performed the literature search and data analysis, and who drafted and/or critically revised the work, and a disclosure statement is required.
References The reference list may include a maximum of 150 references. References must be cited by numbers in square brackets, numbered consecutively in order of citation, and list only the first three authors followed by 'et al.' for article citations.
Figures & Tables At least 1 figure or table must be included. Figures should be submitted within the body of the text, with large figures submitted separately only if file size causes upload problems. Figures and tables must be numbered with Arabic numerals and cited in the text in consecutive numerical order, and each must include a concise caption.

Abstract Original Articles must include an abstract. Abstract must not exceed 250 words. Abstract must be structured. Abstract must be divided into Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
Manuscript Manuscript must not exceed 6000 words including references, and the title page must specify the manuscript word count. Body of the article must be divided into Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. Manuscript must include 3 to 5 keywords, a disclosure statement before the References section, and a Declarations section including conflicts of interest, ethics approval, consent, data and/or code availability, and authors’ contribution statements.
References References must be cited by numbers in square brackets and listed consecutively in the order cited, with only the first three authors named followed by 'et al.' for article citations.
Figures & Tables Original Articles may include no more than a combined total of 7 figures and/or tables, and any excess must be submitted as Electronic Supplementary Material. Figures should be submitted within the body of the text, and large figures may be submitted separately only if the manuscript file size causes upload problems. Tables and figures must be numbered with Arabic numerals and cited in the text in consecutive numerical order, and each must have a caption.
